Description of the Operational Changes:
Compare to the T2CAS computer (refer to MOI 34637), the T3CAS introduces the
following operational changes.
Effect on the FCOM
1. INTRODUCTION
Modification 39146 installs the T3CAS computer on the Single Aisle aircraft family with
the transponder function inactive.
The T3CAS includes:
- The Traffic Collision Avoidance (TCAS) function,
- The Terrain Awareness and Warning (TAWS) function, and
- The Transponder (XPDR) function (activated with optional Mod 151521).
The T3CAS provides two optional TAWS functions:
- Obstacle function (activated with optional Mod 151600),
- Eleview function (activated with optional Mod 151601).
2. T3CAS OPERATIONAL ENHANCEMENT
The T3CAS Standard has the capability to use the Airborne Traffic Situational
Awareness (ATSAW) function.
TCAS change 7.1 enhances TCAS 7.0, this change introduces the new visual and aural
Resolution
Advisory (RA) “LEVEL OFF, LEVEL OFF” instead of “ADJUST VERTICAL SPEED,
ADJUST”. All other RA alerts remain the same.
This change ensures a better understanding of the aural alert, and as a result a better
understanding of the required action to apply.
The following illustrations highlight the differences between the RA of the TCAS 7.0 and
the new RA of TCAS change 7.1:
TCAS 7.0 previous RA
Flight crew reaction: Adjust vertical speed with a reduction of the climb (or descent) so as to
be in the green area of the PFD vertical speed scale.
TCAS 7.1 new RA
Flight crew reaction: Set the vertical speed to zero.
1.1 TAWS: DUAL RA FAULT
The T3CAS receives data from both Radio Altimeters (RA) 1 and 2. Therefore in case of
loss of one RA the reactive TAWS functions are still available.
1.2 STEEP APPROACH AND LANDING FUNCTION COMPATIBILITY (A318 WITH MOD
35542):
The T3CAS is compatible with the A318 steep approach and landing capability: inhibition
of the Mode 5 alert below 130ft.
Effect on the AFM
Amendments in the Appendices and Supplements (APP) section of the AFM states that:
- A list of areas where no terrain data are available along the scheduled route should
be made available to the flight crew,
- TAWS databases (excluding Performance database) are compliant with DO-200A
DPAL2.
- TCAS complies with TCAS II change 7.1 Minimum Operational Performance
Standards (DO-185B MOPS)
Effect on the MMEL
MMEL MI 34-40-03 (RA system) is updated to remove the note that states that the reactive
modes of the TAWS are inoperative when RA 1 is inoperative.
MMEL MI 34-40-04 (TCAS) is updated. With the T3CAS when the TCAS function is
inoperative the TAWS function of the T3CAS remains operative (independent circuit
breaker).
