3: Forces on Ramps and Mutli-Body problems

A common force problem is an object on a ramp. This type of problem
requires shifting the axis.

We place the x-axis ______________ to the ramp

While the y-axis _______________ to the ramp

The reason is because we want acceleration to be on the x-axis, while

the net force in the y-axis equals to zero.
However, by shifting the axis, the __________ force needs to be split
to its components.

Let’s draw a free body diagram of an object on a ramp.

Forces on
a Ramp
If the angle is given as the incline of the ramp, then your gravity force
components are the following:

𝐹𝑔 = _____________
𝑥
𝐹𝑔 = _____________
𝑦

A 2300 kg block is sliding down a hill inclined at an angle of 35

degrees. The coefficient of Kinetic friction is 0.13.
What is the acceleration of the block?

A 562 N trunk is placed on a frictionless plane inclined at 30.0
degrees from the horizontal. Find the magnitude and direction
of the trunk's acceleration.

A skier coasts down a 5-degree slope at a constant speed.

Find the coefficient of kinetic friction between the skis and the snow
covering the slope.

a Ramp

You slide a 325 N trunk up a 20.0-degree inclined plane with a

constant velocity by exerting a force of 211 N parallel to the inclined
plane.

What is the magnitude and direction of the force of friction?

Homework #3

1) A 1975 kg car is rolling down a hill inclined at an angle of 15-degrees.

What is the acceleration of the car?

2) A skier coasts down a 20-degree slope at a constant speed. Find the coefficient
of kinetic friction between the skis and the snow covering the slope.

3) A 750 kg car is sitting at the top of a hill (27.5 degree) and accelerates from rest
to the bottom. The engine applies a force of 1100 N while the coefficient of
friction is 0.44. What is acceleration?
