December 15, 2022 2:30p.m. — 5:00p.m.
Only approved calculators as announced by the Examinations Secretary can be used
in. this examination. It 1s candidates’ responsibility to ensure that their calcula-
tor operates satisfactorily, and candidates must record the name and type of the
calculator used on the front page of the examination script.
Answer ALL NINE questions
Note: You should always give precise and adequate explanations to support your
conclusions except question 1. Clarity of presentation of your argument counts. So
think carefully before you write.
P.1 of4
1. Put down the answers only. No explanations are required.
(a) (4 points) Let f,g:R?* + R be smooth functions, and let
h(x,y) = 9(f(e+y, zy), y*).
Find h,(z,y) in terms of f and g and their partial derivatives. (You
should show the inputs of all functions clearly.)
(b) (4 points) The volume of a cylinder is given by V(r,h) = xr*h. Define
AV = V(1.1,4.2)-V(1,4). Find the approximation to AV using the total
differential at the reference point (1,4).
(c) (4 points) Find the length of the path y(¢) = (2¢°, 3t7, 3t) where 0 <t <5.
(d) (4 points) Let F(z,y, z) = (a+ y,2y,y +z). Compute V-(curlF)+V-F.
2. Determine whether each of the following is true or false. Explain your answers.
(a) (4 points) If a and b are nonzero vectors in R*® which are parallel to each
other, then a-b #0.
(b) (4 points) Let f,g:R? > R be two functions. If
lim x,y)=LeR
(x,y)+(0,0) Fs)
and lim 0)
(og, x,y) OW? does not exist, then lim oy LACEY)
Co ght 99)
x,y) ++9(2, does
not exist.
(c) (4 points) If f : R? > R is a function such that f,,(0,0) and f,(0,0) exist.
Then f must be continuous at (0,0).
(d) (4 points) Define y,(¢) = (2sint, 2. cost, 2t) and y(t) = (8sint,3 cost, 3t).
Then the speed of 7, at t¢ R is the same as the speed of y at f.
P.2 of 4
. (a) (4 points) Find the equation of the plane passing through the points
(-3,-1,2), (2,-4,1) and (1, 5,0).
(b) (4 points) Find the distance between the parallel planes 2x + 3y + 6z = 3
and 4x
+ 6y + 12z = 5.
. Let c be a real constant, and let
if (2,y) # (0,0),
ec if (x,y) = (0,0).
It is known that f is a continuous function.
(a) (6 points) Find the value of c.
(b) (4 points) Compute f,(0,0) and f,(0,0).
. (10 points) Find the global extrema of f(x,y,z) = xyz under the constraint
g4+y* +24 = 3. (You have to show the use of multivariable calculus in your
work.)
. (10 points) Let D be the triangular region in R? with vertices (0,0), (2,1)
and (-2,1). Compute the integral |
Ih sin (y*) dA.
. (10 points) Let D be the region in R? that lies inside the cylinder x? + y? = 1,
below the cone z = 2,/xz? + y? and above the xy-plane. Using triple integrals,
find the volume of D.
. (10 points) Let C’ be the circular arc of the unit circle 7? + y? = 1 that lies in
the first quadrant. Orient C' in the anticlockwise direction. Compute the line
integral
7 (x° dx + xy dy).
P.3 of 4
9. (10 points) Let S be the lateral surface of the elliptic cone z = ,/2x? + 3y?
where 0 < z <4. We orient the surface S such that the normal vector always
points away from the cone. Define F(z, y, z) = (2,1, z7). Compute the surface
integral
[fF 4s.
