The practical focus enhances students' understanding of DC machine performance through hands-on tasks such as determining the efficiency of DC motors by direct or electrical loading and performing Hopkinson’s test . These practicals allow students to directly engage with and apply theoretical concepts, providing a comprehensive understanding of performance parameters and efficiency of DC machines, which are critical for their effective operation and maintenance .

The course adopts practical, experiential learning methods where students engage directly with electrical testing and commissioning tasks . Practicals include determining the breakdown strength of transformer oil, insulation resistance testing, and performing low-voltage tests on induction motors, all under guided supervision to ensure safety. These methods are supported by preparing troubleshooting charts and learning proper tool selection, enabling students to apply their knowledge safely and effectively .

Insulation resistance tests are crucial for assessing the integrity of electrical insulation in motors and transformers, ensuring the prevention of electrical failures and enhancing safety by identifying deterioration . Practically, the course implements this by having students perform insulation resistance tests on a motor or transformer, enabling them to practically understand the test procedure and interpret the results effectively, thus ensuring they can assess insulation health accurately .

The objective of the ELECTRICAL TESTING AND COMMISSIONING LABORATORY course is to equip students with competencies needed in the electrical industry through practical, hands-on experiences and standard safety procedures in testing and commissioning electrical equipment . This aligns with industry requirements as it focuses on essential skills such as selecting appropriate tools and equipment for installation, maintenance, and testing of electrical machinery, measuring the performance of insulating oils, transformers, and motors, and identifying troubleshooting methods for electrical machines .

Continuous internal assessment is structured to provide a comprehensive evaluation of student performance through various components. It includes continuous evaluation worth 50 marks and class attendance worth 10 marks, which together contribute to the internal assessment score . The assessments consist of ongoing evaluation of students’ practical skills and theoretical understanding throughout the semester, promoting consistent engagement with the course content .

The course ensures that students can apply troubleshooting techniques to electrical machines by requiring them to prepare troubleshooting charts for machines like transformers, DC machines, induction motors, and synchronous machines . This exercise promotes an in-depth understanding of potential operational issues and solutions, encouraging analytical skills and readiness to address faults across various types of electrical machinery .

Concepts of regulation and efficiency in transformers are explored through practical exercises such as measuring impedance voltage and load losses of three-phase transformers, and finding regulation and efficiency using back-to-back connection methods . These exercises enable students to calculate how voltage varies with load and evaluate how effectively transformers convert input power to output power, thus understanding critical performance characteristics of transformers .

Learning about different types of fire extinguishers is essential in electrical testing and commissioning due to the risk of electrical fires that can occur from equipment malfunctions or short circuits . Understanding how to select and use the appropriate fire extinguisher type ensures that students can respond effectively to emergencies, minimizing potential damage and enhancing overall safety in electrical environments .

The course incorporates safety practices into electrical testing procedures by teaching students standard safety protocols as part of their learning experience . In addition to practical testing experiences, students prepare reports on methods of artificial respiration (CPR) and study different types of fire extinguishers, ensuring that they are equipped with essential safety knowledge applicable to emergency situations during electrical testing and commissioning .

The examination scheme plays a pivotal role in ensuring course outcomes by structuring assessments to comprehensively evaluate both practical and theoretical competencies . The combination of continuous assessments, along with an end-semester examination, ensures a balanced evaluation. The continuous assessments focus on real-time application of skills and knowledge, while the final examination assesses the cumulative understanding and synthesis of the entire course content, ensuring students are industry-ready .
