Mech 393 – Machine Element Design

Pre-tutorial problem – Tutorial 5

A simply supported shaft is shown in the figure below. A constant magnitude distributed unit load p is
applied as the shaft rotates subject to a time-varying torque that varies from Tmin to Tmax. For the data
in the row(s) in the table below, find the diameter of shaft required to obtain a safety factor of 2 in fatigue
loading if the shaft is steel of Sut =745 MPa and Sy = 427 MPa. The dimensions are in cm, the distributed
force in N/cm, and the torque in N-m.

Assume: A stress concentration arises as a result of the keyways; The finish is machined; The reliability of
the shaft is 99%; The shaft is at room temperature.

Additionally, the notch radii to shaft diameter ratio (r/d ≈ 0.021) and Kfm = Kfs =1.

Note: For torsional loading, use a curve for an Sut that is 20 kpsi higher than that of the material selected

From inspection d will converge through iteratively solving the above expression – In this instance, one
iteration is shown. An understanding of this process is all that is required in an invigilated scenario.
