Summer
Welcome back to the second issue of A Monster For Every

Summer
Table of Contents Season, our comprehensive set of print-and-play miniatures
for your tabletop fantasy roleplaying game.
Introduction 2 This volume, Summer, is inspired by the beach—maybe
Assembly Instructions 3 it’s because I grew up in New Jersey, but for me, Summer
is practically synonymous with going down the shore.
Dragons 6 So I’ve covered the ocean thoroughly, with pretty much
Fighters 11 every aquatic animal, monster, and humanoid in the game.
Continuing the “sun and surf” theme, we have all the fire and
Fire 14 water elemental creatures, and a selection of desert monsters
Genies 18 to represent the sandy beach. No one enjoys the sun more
than reptiles, due to the whole “not capable of maintaining
Giants 19 an internal body temperature without absorbing ambient
heat,” thing, so for humanoids this time we have kobolds and
Kobolds 21
lizardfolk. Finally, we’ve got the two most basic core classes,
Lizardfolk 23 fighters and wizards, to round out the set.
Some questions came up from a few of you about how to
Marine Animals 26
use the monsters, in terms of matching them up to official
Oceanfolk 32 game stat blocks. While many of these monsters have names
that directly match existing monster stat blocks, others—
Ogres 35
especially among the humanoids—are closer to ideas than
Pyramid Guardians 37 exact builds. And even when they specifically match a named
monster, there’s nothing stopping you from using them to
Sahuagin 40
represent something else. For example, the Kobold Slyblade
Sea Monsters 41 is a distinct monster from the 4th Edition game, but ultimately
it’s just a picture of a kobold with two short swords. You can

Assembly Instructions
With these simple instructions, you should be able to
assemble the miniatures in this document in no time.

What You’ll Need

• A pair of scissors.
• Some pennies (or any easily available
coins with a diameter around 1.9 cm)
• Tape; standard transparent office tape
will do, but so will any other tape with
a width of about 0.75 inches (1.9 cm).
• A sheet of paper printed with the
miniatures you want to assemble.

Regular copier paper will hold up for one or two

sessions, but if you plan on reusing them week after
week, try printing on heavier paper stock. Photo
paper or cardstock works nicely.

Step 1
Once you’ve printed the pages you want,
cut out each miniature along the edges of
the black rectangle that encloses each one
(not on the light grey lines).

Instructions

Step 2
Cut the black lines that run through the
two grey circles at the top and bottom of
each miniature.

If you’re using thin paper, you may want to skip this

step. It may make the finished mini too flimsy.
Assembly Instructions continued

Summer
Step 3
Fold each miniature along the grey lines,
creasing it inward, away from the printed
image. There should be three folds, all fac-
ing the same direction: one in the middle,
and one on each side beneath the feet of
the illustrated character.

Step 4
Partially unfold the miniature so that the
two grey circles on either end overlap. Fit
the cut tabs together. You should have a
tiny tent-like shape.

Obviously, if you skipped Step 2, you don’t need to

worry about the cut tabs now!

Step 5
Take a penny and put it in the middle of a
piece of tape about 2 inches (5 cm) long.

Instructions

Step 6
Thread the piece of tape (sticky side
down) through the end of the tent until
the penny rests about where the grey
circle is printed on the miniature. About
a half inch of tape should stick out of each
end of the tent.
Assembly Instructions continued

Summer
Step 7
Fold the exposed ends of the tape down
and around and stick them to the bottom
of the tent. Press the tape down all over
so it sticks.

Step 8
Done! Enjoy your paper miniature!

Minis for different sized monsters—like the riding

boar pictured here—may use more than one penny,
but the principle is the same. But some monsters
use smaller dimes (10¢) or larger quarters (25¢)
instead. Don’t worry, they’re marked!

Mounts
Monsters that can serve as mounts have
two additional lines near the top of the
tent. In order to make the mount ridable,
carefully cut the black line on both sides,
then fold in on both grey lines.

The cross-section of your miniature

should look like a trangle from the front
and the letter “M” from the back.
Instructions

Now you’ve created a ledge that should

support one regular-sized miniature!

What we said about paper weight goes double for

mounts! If you’re planning on using a mount for more
than one session, print it on heavy paper.

The conceptual purpose behind offering two versions of the files—a full-color version and a black-and-white line art version—is to accommodate different user needs concerning printing resources and customization preferences. The black-and-white line art version conserves printer ink, which can be more practical for users on a budget or those needing to print multiple copies. It also provides a canvas for customization, allowing players to personalize miniatures by coloring them as desired, thus enhancing user engagement and creativity through personalized visual adaptations .

To assemble the miniatures, print the pages, then cut out each miniature along the black rectangle edges, not the light grey lines. Follow by cutting the black lines running through the grey circles at the miniature's ends. Fold along grey lines to create a tent shape, with grey circles overlapping for stability. Tape a penny at the base for weight, sticking the tape's exposed ends to the tent's underside for firmness. Using heavier paper like cardstock is recommended for durability, especially if the miniatures will be reused often .

Players can utilize the Legion Sheets in the Summer set to simulate large-scale combat scenarios by populating the battlefield with numerous rank-and-file soldiers without incurring significant resource expenditure. These sheets are designed to add a multitude of standard units, such as guards or basic warriors, without excessive ink usage. This efficiency allows for the portrayal of massive battles or skirmishes, integrating the strategic complexity of competing factions within campaigns. By employing Legion Sheets, game masters can emphasize tactical decision-making and resource management, while also visually enhancing the scene with an army-sized presence, thus elevating the scale and drama of combat narratives .

The inclusion of seasonal themes in 'A Monster For Every Season' enriches players' resources by providing a diverse array of creatures and environmental elements that can be integrated into various campaign settings tailored to specific themes. Each season emphasizes different creature types and elements; for example, Autumn focuses on demons, devils, and undead, while Winter emphasizes ice monsters and aberrations. This seasonal structuring allows for creative storytelling adaptation, allowing players to build narratives that can span various climates, ecological interactions, and thematic motifs, fostering creative play and diverse campaign experiences .

The inclusion of humanoids such as kobolds and lizardfolk in the Summer set is largely due to their ecological adaptations that suit warmer, sun-rich environments. These reptiles are ectothermic, meaning they are not capable of maintaining an internal body temperature without absorbing ambient heat, making them thrive in sunny, warm climates typical of a summer theme. This natural alignment with the sun and warmth reinforces their thematic and ecological appropriateness in the Summer set, illustrating a thoughtful correlation between the creatures' biological needs and the seasonally inspired narrative .

Rich Burlew suggests that players can utilize the miniatures by matching them to official game stat blocks where possible. However, he also encourages using creativity in adapting them for different roles in a campaign. For instance, a miniature labeled as a 'Kobold Slyblade' could represent various kobold roles such as a rogue or an assassin depending on the game's needs. This flexibility is suggested even for miniatures based on official creatures, allowing players to represent any character or creature that matches the depicted arms and armor. Additionally, Burlew notes that some of the creatures are inspired rather than directly modeled on existing resources, inviting players to reinterpret them or to 're-skin' existing monsters, thus surprising players within the game .

The 'Oceanfolk' category in the Summer set includes various aquatic creatures such as Aquatic Elf Rangers, Locathah Druids, Kuo-Toa Guards, and Merfolk Crossbowmen. These figures can play multiple roles within a campaign that revolves around aquatic or coastal settings. For instance, Aquatic Elf Rangers could serve as protectors or guides through ocean territories, while Merfolk or Kuo-Toa might act as adversaries or allies depending on the narrative needs. The diversity within the Oceanfolk category allows players to construct rich underwater or seaside adventures, with roles ranging from combatants to spellcasters, enriching the story with a variety of holistic experiences .

The thematic inspiration behind the Summer edition of 'A Monster For Every Season' is the beach, which is influenced by Rich Burlew's personal experiences of growing up in New Jersey where summer is synonymous with going down the shore. This inspiration is reflected in the comprehensive coverage of oceanic creatures, incorporating a variety of aquatic animals, monsters, and humanoids that align with a 'sun and surf' theme. Additionally, fire and water elemental creatures are included to mirror the heat and aquatic elements of summer, as well as desert monsters to symbolize sandy beaches. The edition also features reptiles such as kobolds and lizardfolk, who thrive in the sun due to their ecological trait of absorbing ambient heat .

Miniatures representing creatures that lack official game descriptions present unique storytelling opportunities by encouraging game masters to invent new scenarios, characteristics, and plot narratives. This allows for creative freedom to introduce unexpected twists and innovative challenges to players, as the unique miniatures can be adapted into any role or function within the campaign. By 're-skinning' these creatures, game masters can surprise players, keeping the gameplay fresh and dynamically unpredictable, thereby enhancing the depth and breadth of the narrative landscape available within tabletop campaigns .

Rich Burlew sees the strategic advantage of updating the art styles as enhancing the visual consistency across editions, making the miniatures more appealing and aligning them with the series' artistic evolution. The introduction of 50 all-new monsters not present in the 2013 Kickstarter-backer version adds value by providing fresh content that could appeal to both original backers and new players, enhancing the gameplay experience with new visual dynamics and potentially inspiring new inventive uses in play. This update underlines the continuous improvement and relevance of the series in engaging and capturing the interest of tabletop RPG enthusiasts .
