GENERAL INTRODUCTION ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:

 The word Pathology is derived from the Greek word Pathos; meaning suffering
and if applied to modern medicine, it is the study of disease. Disease originates at
cellular level;that means cellular pathologies arise from perturbations in molecules i.e
genes, proteins and metabolites that influence cell survival and behaviors. Pathology
is not only study of structural alterations in different diseases but also the effect of
these changes on cellular/tissue function and ultimately the effect of these changes
on the patient. It is not a discipline isolated from the living patient but rather a basic
approach to a better understanding of disease and therefore a foundation of sound
clinical medicine. The Department of Pathology is a bridge between basic sciences
and clinical medicine. The foundation of modern pathology isunderstanding the
cellular and molecular aberrations that give rise to diseases i.e the modern
pathologists study the structural, molecular, biochemical and functional changes in
cells, tissues and organs that underlie the disease. By the use of morphologic,
microbiologic, immunologic and molecular techniques, pathologist attempts to
explain the whys & wherefores of the signs and symptoms manifested by patients
while providing rationale basis for clinical care & therapy. The four aspects of a
disease process i.e etiology, pathogenesis, morphologic changes & clinical
manifestations form the core of the pathology. Pathogenesis refers to the sequence
of molecular, biochemical and cellular events from the initial stimulus to the ultimate
expression of the disease. It explains how the underlying etiologies produce the
morphologic & clinical manifestations. The study of pathogenesis remains one of the
main domains of pathology.

MISSION OF THE DEPARTMENT OF PATHOLOGY:

1. To perform all investigations of patients admitted in our hospital with as less
turnover time as possible.
2. Participate in a recognized Quality Assurance Activities and receive formal
accreditations to ensure that reports signed out of department are reliable.

VISION OF DEPARTMENT OF PATHOLOGY:

1. To establish the Department of Pathology which will provide tertiary care
diagnostic services in the associated hospital of our College.
2. To establish histopathology, hematology, cytology, clinical pathology &
research laboratories in the department.
3. Hematology sections should have anemia laboratory,leukemia laboratory with
flowcytometery, coagulation laboratory and hemolytic anemia laboratory.
4. Cytology sections should have facilities for exfoliative cytology, liquid based
cytology, cell block and immunocytochemistry
5. Histopathology section should have facilities for processing of surgical
pathology specimens to generate H&E sections through routine formalin fixation
and paraffin embedding.
6. Research Laboratory: Once these sections are established we aspire to have
facilities forfrozen section, flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry, Flourescent
in-situ hybridization (FISH), Microarray, Cytogenetics facility and Polymerase
chain Reaction based molecular tests in different sections of department so that
patients can be given personalized molecular targeted therapy.

Pathology.

ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES OF THE DEPARTMENT:

1. Theory classes of undergraduates in the form of lectures, SDL &SGD.

2. Practical classes of undergraduateswherein students are made to perform
different skills& there is discussion of Case sheets.
3. Theory classes of students of [Link]. Paramedical sciences.
4. Practical classesof students of [Link]. Paramedical sciences.
5. Routine signs out in histopathology, cytopathology, hematology and special
hematology wherein senior residents learn passively as well as
as there is active discussion of all cases.
6. Every Friday there is Slide seminar.
7. Shortly clinic pathological conferences will be started with almost every
Department of the College.
8. Every Thursday there is Journal Club.
9. Faculty members & Residents are encouraged to attend CME’S ,Seminars,
Conferences & Workshops.
 10. Research Activities: All faculty members & Residents are pursuing different
research project in the department.
11. Interesting case presentations are done regularly in the department.

SIGN OUT OF INVESTIGATIONS FROM DEPARTMENT OF PATHOLOGY:

1. Emergency Laboratory:-Emergency laboratory runs 24X7 and where all
emergency tests are done and caters to all departments of Medical College. The
tests which are done in emergency lab are Hb, TLC, DLC, RBC Count, HCT, Red
blood cell indices, platelet count, PTI,PT,INR and R/E of urine.
2. Central Lab of the Hospital:- In this laboratory all patients attending OPDs are
[Link] which are performed in central lab areHb, TLC, DLC, RBC Count,
HCT, Red blood cell indices, platelet count, PT,PTI,INR, R/E of urine,D-Dimer, PBF,
ESR, Retic, G6PD &Coombs test.
3. Clinical Pathology:- Routine sign outs
4. Hematology:- Routine sign outs and bone marrow aspiration& biopsy.
5. Special Hematology:-Retic, G6PD, Direct & indirect Coombs Test.
6. Cytopathology: FNAC of swelling, fluid cytology, semen analysis, wet cytology,
Pap smear& imprint smears
7. Histopathology: Biopsies & Surgical excision specimens are processed in this
laboratory. These specimens are received from all departments of the college
