Title: Balancing of rotating masses Sheet No.: 3

1- Four masses A, B, C and D as shown below are to be completely balanced. The planes
containing masses B and C are 300 mm apart. Find;
 The magnitude and the angular position of mass A, and
 The position of planes A and D (x and y).
Mass (kg) R (mm) θo
A 180
B 30 240 0
C 50 120 90
D 40 150 210

2- The four masses A, B, C and D shown below are to be completely balanced by finding:
 1. The magnitude and the angular position of mass A,
 2. The position of planes A and D (x and y).
The planes containing masses B and C are 300 mm apart

3- Four masses m1, m2, m3 and m4 are 200 kg, 300

kg, 240 kg and 260 kg respectively. The
corresponding radii of rotation are 0.2 m, 0.15 m,
0.25 m and 0.3 m respectively and the angles between
successive masses are 45°, 75° and 135°. Find the
position and magnitude of the balance mass required,
if its radius of rotation is 0.2 m.
4- Determine the bearing reactions at A and B
if the speed of the shaft is 300 rev/min. Also
determine the magnitude and orientation of the
balancing mass if it is located at a radius of 50 mm.
a = 800 mm, b = 200 mm, R1 = 25 mm, R2 = 35
mm, R3 = 40 mm, m1 = 2 kg, m2 = 1.5 kg, and m3
= 3 kg.

5- If the speed of the shaft is 220 rev/min,

calculate the magnitudes and orientations of the
bearing reactions at A and B for the two-mass
system. a = b = 250 mm, c = 50 mm, R1 = 60 mm,
R2 = 40 mm, m1 = 2 kg, and m2 = 1.5 kg.

Title: Gear Trains Sheet No.: 6

1- Design a compound, spur gear train for a ratio of 180:1. The module of the gears is m = 9. Specify
pitch diameters and numbers of teeth. Sketch the train to scale.
2- Design a compound, spur gear train for a ratio of 250:1. The module of the gears is m = 9. Specify
pitch diameters and numbers of teeth. Sketch the train to scale.
3- The Figure shows diagrammatically a compound epicyclic
gear train. Wheels A , D and E are free to rotate
independently on spindle O, while B and C are compound
and rotate together on spindle P, on the end of arm OP. All
the teeth on different wheels have the same module. A has
12 teeth, B has 30 teeth and C has 14 teeth cut externally.
- Find the number of teeth on wheels D and E.
- If the wheel A is driven clockwise at 1 r.p.s. while D is driven
counter clockwise at 5 r.p.s., determine the magnitude and
direction of the angular velocities of arm OP and wheel E.
- If the wheel A is driven clockwise at 1 r.p.s. while D is fixed, determine the magnitude and direction of
the angular velocities of arm OP and wheel E.

4- In the epicyclic gear train, as shown in Figure, the

driving gear A rotating in clockwise direction has 14
teeth, the fixed annular gear C has 100 teeth and gear D
has 12 teeth. All the gears have the same module (you
can get the number of teeth for gears B and E).
- If gear A is rotating at 1200 r.p.m, find the speed and
direction of rotation of gear E.
- If gear A is rotating at 1200 r.p.m and gear C is unfixed and
rotating at 1000 r.p.m in the counter clockwise direction,
find the speed and direction of rotation of gear E.
5- A planetary gear train as shown in Figure. Gear 1 has
N1 = 36 external gear teeth, gear 2 has N2 = 40 external
gear teeth, and the gear 2’ has N2’ = 21 external gear
teeth. Gears 2 and 2' are fixed on the same shaft, CC'.
Gear 3 has N3 = 30 external gear teeth, and gear 3' has
N3' = 24 external gear teeth. Gears 3 and 3' are fixed
on the same shaft, EE'. The planet gear 4 has N4 = 18
external gear teeth, and the planet gear 5 has N5 = 14
external gear teeth. Gear 1 rotates with a constant
input angular speed n1 = 320 rpm. The module of the
gears is m = 30 mm. The pressure angle of the gears is
20°. Find the angular velocity of the output planet arm
6 ω6 .
6- A planetary gear train as shown in Figure. The sun gear 1
has N1 = 11 teeth, the planet gear 2 has N2 = 19 teeth, gear
3 has N3 = 40 internal gear teeth, gear 4 has N4 = 29 external
gear teeth, and gear 5 has N5 = 24 external gear teeth. Gear
1 rotates with a constant input angular speed n1 = 200 rpm.
The module of the gears is m = 22 and the pressure angle
of the gears is 20°. (a) Find the angular velocity of the
output ring gear 6, ω6.

7- A compound epicyclic gear train is shown in the

figure. It consists of an annulus gear A which is fixed, the
compound gear (or planet gear) B-C, the sun gear D and the
arm H. The sun gear D is co-axial with the annulus gear A
and the arm but independent of them. The annulus gear A
meshes with the gear B and the sun gear D meshes with the
gear C.
The gear A has 72 internal teeth, The gear C has 16 external
teeth, and the gear D has 36 external teeth. The compound
gear B-C and D are carried on an arm H which rotates about
the centre of A at 18 r.p.m. counter clock wise. If the gear A
is fixed, determine the speed of gears D and the compound
gear B-C.
