The movement for positive change that I chose was the Autism Awareness movement.
I chose
this movement because of my child. 8 months ago, my daughter was diagnosed with level 2
ASD. This completely shifted our lives. I had to adapt in ways I never knew I would have to.
Deep diving into the autism community I learned so much from others and was able to find
resources that helped evolve our everyday life. The Autism Speaks platform helps aid me in
ways I needed for my child. One creative work from popular culture is the movie “Rain Man”.
This movie was about a man whose dad died and he wanted the fortune. In the process he found
out he had a brother who was highly autistic. He had no clue how to take care of someone that
has a disability. He didn’t want to give him back the facility he was sent to at a young age, but in
the end, he knew it was best for him. It was amazing to watch his brother learn ways to adapt to
his brother and the world around them. Another creative work is the tv series called “Atypical”.
This movie was more about a young kid navigating through relationships and school as an
autistic. This series goes more in depth about the sensory struggles and the dynamics of the
family. You get a true inside look at the life of a teenager navigating through life with autism.
The series also cast real people with autism. The language used in these creative works is
informative and direct. They both give insight to different levels of autism and the evolution and
revolving world of autism. The symbol for autism is puzzle pieces. These puzzle pieces represent
the complexity and the unknowing of autism. Autism is so complex and has so many different
levels on the spectrum. The colorful puzzle pieces are an excellent representation of the
differences but alike concepts. The representation of ideas in these creative works show the
good, bad and ugly of society revolving autism. These creative works also show the scale of how
autism is different from person to person. These are all important because as someone who has
never been exposed to the autism world, you start to understand that you may find similarities in
autism from person to person, but everyone is different in their own way. Being aware of the
different levels of autism allows for openness and people to speak or act judgement free. These
elements of creative works convey the primary ideas of the movement by portraying autism in
society and real life. They do this by showing the family dynamics, the personal relationships,
and the hardships that come with being neurodivergent.
