CHAPTER ONE: INTRODUCTION

1.0 INTRODUCTION
An online auction system is a digital platform that allows users to buy and sell items through a
bidding process over the internet. These systems have revolutionized the traditional auction
model by leveraging the power of the internet to reach a global audience.
An online auction system will help users to buy or sell item; they can trade anything they like by
posting item. This system will allow users to post their products for auction, bidders can register
and bid for any available product. The global reach for online auction market places allows for
the buyers and sellers to overcome geographical constraints and purchase products anytime from
anywhere over the internet. The online auction market provides the consumers with great
advantage of low prices, greater product selection.
The concept of online auctions can be traced back to the early 1990s, when the internet was still
in its infancy. However, it wasn’t until the early 2000s that online auction systems gained
popularity, credits to the widespread of the internet and advancements in e-commerce
technology. Today, online auction systems are used by millions of people around the world,
offering a vast array of goods and services for bidding.
Online Auction System is a web application which is built for buying and selling items
through the internet by making a bid to the item. Increasing the bid over the time and the
item will be won by the bidder who makes the highest bid. Many kind of auctions are
existing but the most famous one are English auction ascending and Dutch auction descending.
In the developed project the English auction has been used where the price of items will
increase.

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Online auctions have become increasingly popular in recent years as they provide a convenient
and competitive way for buyers and sellers to conduct transactions. An interesting phenomenon
of online sales had been the widespread usage of online auction websites that attract millions of
users around the globe to sell, bid, and buy anything. Menezes and Monteiro (2005). The
Penyshia super market is one of the famous market in Juba which require an online auction
system to serve thousands of users accessing it.
Online auction system serves as a virtual marketplace where bidders who can be geographically
dispersed compete to close the deal on auctioned items listed by sellers. Online auctions allow
faster and less expensive transaction with no geographical barriers. (Adler, et al 2002)
The popularity of online auction is likely to grow, as buying and selling is a very basic part of
human nature. However, not every system has been able to attract the desired number of bidders
into the auction process. Successful online auction system design can play a significant role in
the overall marketing communication mix. Auctions are a popular form of price determination in
e-commerce due to their simplicity and efficiency. (Jin and Wu 2006)
Recent statistics showed that 80 percent of highly satisfied online consumers would shop again
within two months, and 90 percent would recommend the websites to others. On the other hand,
87 percent of revising customers would permanently leave their Internet merchants without
registering any complaints (Online Auction Survey Summary 2001). This has clear implications
for a study focusing on user satisfaction.
According to Wang et al. (2001), effectiveness measures of e-marketing must incorporate
different aspects of customer satisfaction to become a diagnostic instrument for practical and
theoretical use. A study incorporating these aspects can contribute to the understanding of how e-
consumers evaluate different auction websites. It can also help auction website companies
investigate ways to improve their websites to attract new bidders and improve upon the bidders’
loyalty to their website (Anderson and Srinivasan 2003)
The global reach of online auction market places allows for the buyers and sellers to overcome
geographical constraints and purchase products anytime from anywhere over the internet. The
online auction market provides the consumers with great advantages of low prices, greater
product selection and greater efficiency compared to the usual traditional offline markets (Ghose
et al, 2006).
The use of online auction system makes use of the decision making assistance tool that results in
greater buyer’s certainty towards their choice of the seller’s and product that they make. The
decision making assistance tool consists of three parts that is the product information signals,
seller’s rating scores and seller’s shilling activities. Most available current auction systems do
not fully provide product descriptions as well as fully evaluate the different type of sellers that
participate in the auctioning process. Online systems come from a background where there is no
full evaluation of the shilling activities that take place in different auction systems. The
evaluation of shilling activities goes a long way in providing for certainty in the different type of
seller. This can be achieved through the provision of the shill scores or shill ratings for each
seller in an auction system. By providing the sellers shill rating the different bidders can easily
make choices for the different sellers they decide to bid for their products.

1.2 PROBLEM STATEMENT

The problem that usually arises in online auction is that of the buyer’s uncertainty towards the
sellers and their products due to the lack of physical evaluation of the products (Pavlou, 2008).
Despite the increased numerous advantages of online auction there are problems that are still
present, unlike in offline markets where buyers can physically evaluate the product quality and
interact directly with the sellers, in online markets the buyers do not have such opportunity as the
buyers only get to evaluate the product quality via the internet interface that cannot perfectly
describe the products (Melnik et al, 2005).
The problem of product and the seller’s uncertainty negatively affects the key success of the
outcomes of the online auctions. The implementation of this online auction system that provides
detailed seller and product descriptions results in the increased certainty of the bidders towards
the choice of the products and sellers that they make.

1.3 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

To implement an online auction system for the buyers and sellers.

1.3.1 GENERAL OBJECTIVE

The main objective of this research is to provide a platform where buyers and sellers can conduct
transactions in a dynamic, real-time environment, ensuring a fair and transparent process for
bidding and purchasing goods and services.
1.3.2 SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
 To provide a secure and transparent platform for buyers and sellers to conduct auctions.
 To offer a user-friendly interface that is easy to navigate and use.
 To ensure a competitive environment by allowing multiples buyers to place bids in real-
time.
 To generate reports for each completed bids in the auction system and notify the bidders
of new bids.
 To compute the seller’s shill scores for each seller that sells products on the online
auction system.
 To allow sellers to easily list items with detailed description, images and starting bid
prices.
 To ensure only registered and verified users can participate in auctions, enhancing
security and trust.

1.4 SCOPE OF THE STUDY
This online auction system is only allowable for users located around Phenicia Super Market.
This users can participate in auctioning only if they have created an account through the
registration form of the super market.

1.5 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Online auction systems have fundamentally transformed the way goods and services are bought
and sold, offering arrange of advantages that enhances both buyer and seller experiences. The
significance of these system include the following:
 This system will be accessible to everyone from various locations to engage in bidding.
As a results, sellers can reach a global audience, while buyers can access wider variety of
products than ever before.
 Transparency is a critical feature of this system. It ensures that all bidders are aware of
the current bid status and the competition they face, leading to a fairer auction process.
 This system will be competitive, convenient, cost-effective solutions that leverage
technology while ensuring security for participants involved in buying and selling goods
around Phenicia super market.
1.6 LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY
 The lack of auction sales in Juba which led to the difficulties to know more about the
invisible sides of auction sales.
 The other reason was lack of time since the time given for research was only three
months.
 Financial constraints to cover transport cost for meeting various stake holders during
requirement gathering was another limitation.
1.7 RESEARCH QUESTIONS
These research questions provide a comprehensive framework for understanding various aspects
of an online action system. The research questions include the following:
 What features do users find most valuable in an online auction platform?
 How can the user interface be designed to enhance usability for both buyers and sellers?
 What security measures are necessary to protect users’ personal and financial
information?
 What payment methods do users prefer when participating in online auctions?
 How does pricing strategy affect buyer participation rate in auctions?
