Maker Math toolkits provide your
upper grade level students with simple, hands-on applications of
key mathematics skills. These kits are ideal for small group
guided math as students build and apply math concepts as a
group. Differentiated options for teacher prompts are
provided (LEVELS A, B, and sometimes C) to cater to your
students’ individual math levels for each specific skill. The
provided leveled task cards are designed for use in Math
Centers, small group math rotations, or independent practice.
The routines appeal to visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learners
because students are provided a visual, yet concrete way to
“build” and apply major math concepts. They can apply their
understanding by solving problems on the provided graphic
organizers for each skill. The graphic organizers can either be
copied or placed inside reusable page protectors for students
to write and wipe responses.
I recommend that you create enough Maker Math toolkits for
as many students that are in your guided math groups and/or
math centers at one time. Suggested supplies for each skill are
listed on Pages 7-8.
Suggested Routines for MAKEr MATH:
1) The teacher should introduce and model focus skill.
2) Using appropriate leveled prompts, the teacher should guide
students in building structures during small group instruction.
(Instructional cards with photos are provided to guide students.)
3) Students should explain math concepts as they build their
structures.
4) With guidance, students should complete the graphic organizers
that go with each skill and structure.
5) Students continue practicing skills independently using the task
cards and recording sheets provided. ©Brooke Brown

Perimeter & Area
Teacher Prompts
LEVEL A (squares & rectangles)
*How do you find the perimeter of a shape?
*When might it be useful to measure and calculate the perimeter of a
shape or space?
*Instead of measuring and adding all the sides of a square, how can we
calculate the perimeter more quickly? (multiply one side by four)
*Instead of measuring and adding all the sides of a rectangle, how can we
calculate the perimeter more quickly? (multiply longer side by 2 and
shorter side by 2, then add together OR add the length and the width and
multiply by 2)
*Find a building brick with 4/8/12 pegs. What is the perimeter of this
building brick?
*Make a square/rectangle by putting together _______ building bricks.
What is the perimeter of the shape?
*How do you find the area of a shape?
*When might it be useful to calculate the area of a shape or space?
*How can we use multiplication to find the area of a rectangle of a
square? (length x width)
*Find a building brick with 4/8/12 pegs. What is the area of this building
brick?
*Make a square/rectangle by putting together _______ building bricks.
What is the area in square units?
LEVEL B (irregular shapes)
USE THE PROMPTS ABOVE, INCLUDING THE FOLLOWING:
*How can we find the area of an irregular shape? (Divide the shape
into regular parts such as squares and rectangles, calculate the area
of each shape separately, then add together.)
*Find two bricks that are different sizes and put them together.
What is the perimeter and area of this irregular shape?
*Find three bricks that are different sizes and put them together.
What is the perimeter and area of this irregular shape?
*Choose ____ bricks and put them together to make a design of your
choice. What is the perimeter and area of this design?
