WASTE FOOD MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

1. Rationale
The issue of food waste is a serious global problem. Every day, large amounts of food are
thrown away while millions of people go hungry. This waste not only affects those in need
but also puts a strain on our environment by contributing to pollution and resource depletion.
Many individuals and organizations have extra food they can donate, but often there is no
easy way to connect them with those who need it the most.
Our app is designed to solve this problem by acting as a bridge between people or businesses
with leftover food and NGOs that work to distribute food to the needy. Donors can easily post
details about the food they have available, including how much there is, what type of food it
is, and when it will expire. NGOs can then view these posts and request food that matches
their needs, such as feeding a certain number of people or finding specific types of food.
By using the app, donors and NGOs can communicate directly with each other to arrange
delivery and pickup. This ensures that the food reaches the right people in time, reducing
waste and helping to feed those in need. Additionally, the app sends reminders for upcoming
delivery dates and warns both parties when food is close to expiring, ensuring nothing goes to
waste. Overall, the app makes it easier for people to donate food and for NGOs to distribute it
efficiently.

The app will be scalable for different regions and adaptable for various types of food

5. Literature Survey
Food wastage and its environmental, social, and economic impact have been studied
extensively. Research shows that nearly one-third of the food produced globally is wasted,
while millions suffer from hunger. Several studies emphasize the importance of efficient food
redistribution systems, many of which involve technological interventions. Existing apps like
"Too Good To Go" and "Food Rescue US" inspire the development of this app, though they
typically target individuals rather than NGOs. This app focuses on bridging NGOs with
donors to ensure efficient large-scale distribution.

6. Problem Definition
 Food Waste: Extra food, whether from restaurants, households, or events, often goes
to waste due to lack of awareness or access to channels for donation.
 Hunger Crisis: NGOs and charities struggle to feed all those in need due to limited
access to fresh food donations.
 Lack of Communication: Often, there is no direct channel for donors and NGOs to
communicate about food donations, leading to logistical challenges.
7. Proposed Methodology
 User Registration: Donors and NGOs will register their details.
 Food Posting by Donors: Donors will post food availability with specifics like type,
quantity, and expiry date.
 NGO Requests: NGOs will post their requirements based on the number of people
they need to feed.
 Chat Integration: Both parties can communicate directly to finalize delivery details.
 Notification System: Automated reminders for delivery dates and expiry warnings.
 History Tracking: Both parties will be able to track previous donations and requests.
8. Aim
To develop an efficient food donation system that connects donors and NGOs, thereby
reducing food wastage and contributing to hunger relief.
9. Objectives
 Create a user-friendly platform for donors and NGOs.
 Enable real-time communication and coordination.
  Automate notifications for better scheduling.
 Track and analyze donation trends via history tracking.
10. Resources
 Development Tools: Android Studio (for mobile app development), Firebase or any
suitable backend service (for real-time chat and notifications).
 Team: A team of three students, each contributing to different aspects of app
development such as front-end design, back-end development, and database
management.

 NGOs and Donors: Since we are not partnered with NGOs for real-world testing, we
will focus on creating a fully functional prototype and conduct simulated testing to
validate the app’s features and functionality.

 Software
 Front-end: Java/Kotlin for Android development.
 Back-end: Firebase for real-time database and chat integration.
 Notification System: Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM) for notifications.
 Database: Firebase Realtime Database or Firestore for storing donor, NGO, and food
details.
