Application exercises:
For the development of the following exercises, note that 𝐺𝐺 corresponds to the
group number and 𝐶𝐶𝐶 to the last 3 digits of the identification number.
1. An airport uses a radar system to determine the location of airplanes, which
receives a response signal that takes 𝑡 = 𝐺𝐺 𝜇𝑠 to return to the station.

Determine the distance to the detected airport.
Consider the electrical characteristics of the air and carry out the following steps:

d. Calculate the distance between the station and the airplane 𝑑 = 𝑉𝑝 ∗ 𝑡/2.
𝑡 = 83𝜇𝑆 = 0.000083 𝑠
𝑑 = 𝑉𝑝 ∗ 𝑡 /2
𝑑 = 2.99721751603𝑥108𝑚/𝑠 ∗ 0.000083𝑠 /2
𝑑 = 12438.45
2. From an airplane, which is ℎ1 = 1 𝑘𝑚 high, a communication signal 𝑓 =
𝐶𝐶𝐶 𝑀𝐻𝑧 is emitted to a submarine that is ℎ2 = 500 𝑚 deep, the angle
of incidence of the signal on the sea surface is 𝑎 = (2 + 𝐺𝐺 2 )°. Determine
the time it takes for the signal to reach the submarine. Note that 𝐶𝑜 =
3𝑥108𝑚/𝑠 and 𝑛𝑠𝑒𝑎 = 30.
ℎ1 = 1 𝑘𝑚
𝑓 = 878MHZ
ℎ2 = 500 𝑚
𝑎 = (2 + 𝐺𝐺 2 )°.=168
𝐶𝑜 = 3𝑥108 𝑚/𝑠
3. 𝑛𝑠𝑒𝑎 = 30.
a. Calculate the distance 𝑑1. (𝑑1 = ℎ1/𝑠𝑒𝑛(𝑎)).
For development, follow the following steps:
(𝑛𝑎𝑖𝑟𝑆𝑒𝑛(90° − 𝑎) = 𝑛𝑠𝑒𝑎𝑆𝑒𝑛(𝑏))
b. Using Snell's Law, calculate the angle of refraction𝑏.
c. Calculate the distance 𝑑2. (𝑑2 = ℎ2/𝑐𝑜𝑠(𝑏)). d. Calculate the
propagation speed of the wave 𝑉𝑝2 at sea. (𝑉𝑝2 = 𝐶𝑜/𝑛𝑠𝑒𝑎), where
𝑛𝑠𝑒𝑎 is the “refractive index” of sea and Co is the speed of light in a
vacuum.
d. Based on 𝑉𝑝1 and 𝑑1 determine the time 𝑡1 of the first path (𝑡1 =
𝑑1/𝑉𝑝1). (take 𝑉𝑝 from exercise 1, 𝑉𝑝1 = 𝑉𝑝).
e. Based on 𝑉𝑝2 and 𝑑2 determine the time 𝑡2 of the second path (𝑡2 =
𝑑2/𝑉𝑝2). g. Calculate the total time of the route 𝑡 = 𝑡1 + 𝑡2.
3.A lossless transmission line has a characteristic impedance of 𝑍0 = 75Ω,
a length of 𝐿 = (2 + 𝐺𝐺 2 )𝑚 and is excited by a signal of 𝑓 = 𝐶𝐶𝐶
𝑀𝐻𝑧. The line is connected to an antenna with load impedance 𝑍𝐿 = (45
+ 𝑗35)Ω. Considering that 𝑉𝑝 = 1𝑥108𝑚/𝑠, calculate:
a. Wavelength 𝜆. (𝑉𝑝 = 𝜆 ∗ 𝑓).
b. Electrical length ℓ.
c. Input impedance 𝑍𝑖𝑛.
d. Reflection coefficient Γ (magnitude and phase).
e. VSWR.

p136-138. 3p. Abstract: Absorption-controlled charge and discharge currents in
cross-linked polyethylene (XPE) cable insulation before and after thermal aging
have been measured. The experimental dependences were analyzed in terms of
the equivalent Voigt scheme. Known parameters of the Voigt scheme were used
to calculate the frequency dependences of relative dielectric
permittivity, loss factor, and loss tangent of XPE films in the region of low
frequencies (ω = 10-1 s) at high temperatures. Results of analysis of the
absorption characteristics of XPE were applied to modeling of the process of
thermal aging of cable insulation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] DOI:

the anisotropy of turbulence relative to the vertical and horizontal directions,
through the anisotropy of the structure function exponent. Using the obtained
anisotropy spectrum, we calculate various parameters such as log-amplitude
variance for various atmospheric communication channels with comparison to the
classical Kolmogorov model and newer models developed in previous works.
