“ What is Art?”
In my high school days, we had a field trip when I was in 8th grade. One of the places we
visited before is the museum in Manila. Before we go inside the museum, I can see from far
away some of the artwork that I've seen for the first time in my life since I never experienced
visiting a museum before. At first, I was amazed by all the artwork I've seen even though I don't
understand yet the meaning of some of them. The museum that we visited is the National
Museum of Fine Arts that is located in Padre Burgos Ave, Ermita, Manila.
When I look carefully at every painting that is displayed in a museum, some of them I don't
know what it wants to convey because it is complicated for me and it is hard to understand the
meaning or message of it to the people. In some of the artwork, I felt disconnected because it
didn't get my attention so I kinda just pass by and don't look at them closely. Every time I see an
artwork that I'm not interested in at all, I do not feel any emotion by looking at it. Furthermore,
one of the reasons why I feel disconnected in some of the artwork is because it is hard for me to
understand it even though I try to understand it. Therefore, I can say that not all the artwork
we've seen can be understood, some of them even try to understand them, we still don't know the
answer to all the questions that are in our mind. Understanding the artwork needs analyzing or
you can ask the tour guide to know information about an artwork so you can relate to it. I want to
share one of the paintings that inspired me which is the “The Burning of Manila” (1942) by
Fernando Amorsolo Y Cueto. At first, I thought it was just a painting that has simple meaning,
but I'm wrong because it contains information about what happened and how some parts of
Manila were destroyed during World War II.
Overall, visiting a museum is not just for fun but it also will give you knowledge in many
things that you haven't learned yet. Every artwork made by an artist that is displayed in a
museum has its purpose. Every artwork is important since it helps us to know many things such
as our history and many more. Furthermore, before judging an artwork, you must scan it
carefully so you can realize that It was not only made to display but to share the good ideas and
knowledge of the artists with the people.
