Lesson 2: Binding Energy
• Binding energy – energy required to separate to infinity all nucleons of a
nucleus.
• It is the energy equivalence to mass and is given by :
𝑬 = 𝒎𝒄𝟐
E – energy in Joules
m- mass defect in kilograms
c- speed of light [3 × 108 m/s]
• Energy can also be expressed in electron-volts (eV) and Mega electron-volts
(MeV)
1ev = 1.6 × 10-19J
to leave answer in MeV divide answer in eV by 106
Qn1: Calculate the binding energy of 56
26𝐹𝑒
mass of neutron = 1.0087u
mass of proton = 1.0073u
mass of 56
26𝐹𝑒 nucleus = 55.9552u
Sln1: Firstly, calculate the mass defect
number of protons = 26 number of neutrons =30
∆𝒎 = mass of separated nucleons – mass of nucleus
= [30(1.0087u) + 26(1.0073u) – 55.9552u]
= 0.4956u
Then convert mass defect in u to kgs
1u = 1.66 * 10-27kg
m = 0.4956u * 1.66* 10-27 = 8.23 * 10-28kg
Finally, calculate E
E = mc2
=(8.23*10-28) (3*108)2 = 7.41 * 10-11J
1eV = 1.6 * 10-19J
Energy in eV = ( 7.41 * 10-11)/( 1.6 * 10-19) = 463125000 eV
Energy in MeV = 463125000/106 = 463.125MeV
