Lesson 3: Binding Energy per nucleon

• Binding energy per nucleon it measures the stability of a nuclei.

• The greater the binding energy per nucleon the more stable it is
𝑩𝒊𝒏𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑬𝒏𝒆𝒓𝒈𝒚
Binding energy per nucleon =
𝑵𝒖𝒄𝒍𝒆𝒐𝒏 𝒏𝒖𝒎𝒃𝒆𝒓
• The variation of Binding energy per nucleon with mass number is shown
below.

• 56
26𝐹𝑒 has higher BE/nuc hence it is the most stable nuclei
• Nuclei with mass numbers less than that of 56
26𝐹𝑒 undergoes nuclear fusion
(combine) to increase their mass number therefore increasing BE/nuc.
• Nuclei with mass numbers greater than that of 56 26𝐹𝑒 undergoes nuclear
fission ( split) to decrease their mass number therefore increasing BE/nuc

Qn1: Calculate the binding energy per nucleon of 56

26𝐹𝑒

calculate mass defect, calculate binding energy, answer in MeV and Divide
Binding energy with mass number .We have already calculated the binding
energy of 56
26𝐹𝑒

Binding energy of 56
26𝐹𝑒 = 463.125MeV

Binding energy per nucleon = 463.125/56

= 8.27MeV/nucleon (most stable)
