1. A tank initially contains brine (seawater) with a density ρi . Pure water of density ρo
enters the tank at a constant volume flowrate Q and mixes thoroughly with the liquid in the
tank. If the liquid volume in the tank − V remains constant, find the time rate if change of
the density of the liquid mixture in the tank dρT /dt and the time τ required for the density
of the liquid in the tank to reach ρf , where ρo < ρf < ρi
2. A cart with frictionless wheels holds a water tank, motor, pump, and nozzle. The cart
is on horizontal ground and initially still. At time zero the cart has a mass Mo and the
pump is started to produce a jet of water with area Aj , velocity Ujet at 30◦ to the horizontal.
Find and solve the equations governing the mass and velocity of the cart as a function of time.
3. The integral form of linear momentum given as
d ⃗ d− ⃗ [(V
⃗ −W ⃗ =F
⃗ ).dA] ⃗
R R

ρV V + ρV

⃗ and absolute velocity of the bound-
is written in terms of the absolute velocity of the fluid V
ary, or control, surface W⃗ , both with respect to an inertial reference frame. Consider an
inertial nondeforming control volume moving with a constant velocity U ⃗o with respect to an
inertial reference frame. Show that the integral form of linear momentum can be re-written
in terms of the relative velocity of the fluid with respect to the control volume V⃗ −U ⃗o :

4. Derive the boundary conditions of velocity and stress at the interface of two fluids using
the conservation laws. Assume surface tension is zero.
5. Consider an incompressible planar Couette flow, which is the flow between two parallel
plates separated by a distance b. The upper plate is moving parallel to itself at speed U ,
and the lower plate is stationary. Let the x-axis lie on the lower plate. All flow fields are
independent of x. show that the pressure distribution is hydrostatic and that the solution
of the Navier-Stokes equation is
Uy
u(y) =
b
Write the expressions for the stress and strain rate tensors, and show that the viscous
dissipation per unit volume is ϕ = µU 2 /b2
Take a rectangular control volume for which the two horizontal surfaces coincide with the
walls and the two vertical surfaces are perpendicular to the flow. Evaluate every term of en-
ergy equation (Refer kundu 4th edition equation 4.63) for this control volume and show that
the balance is between the viscous dissipation and the work done in moving the upper surface.
6. The air velocity in the duct of a heating system is to be measured by a pitot-static
probe inserted into the duct parallel to the flow. If the differential height between the water
columns connected to the two outlets of the probe is 2.4 cm, determine (a) the flow velocity
and (b) the pressure rise at the tip of the probe. The air temperature and pressure in the
duct are 45◦ and 98 kPa, respectively.
