1 Also known as the Instantaneous Center of Rotation Method, this method considers the ductility of the weld group and the
load redistribution that occurs when parts of the weld begin to yield. It also considers the effect of the angle between the
weld reaction and the weld’s longitudinal axis. It is more accurate than the Elastic Method.
2 The reactions shown have been scaled linearly from the reactions at P , which may not be accurate since the stress/strain
ult
relationship is nonlinear. Still displaying the reactions, though, to show the approximate force distribution.

WELD GROUP DESCRIPTION :
- Fillet welds
- C-shaped weld group (facing right)
- (1) 10 " long, vertical weld
- (2) 5 " long, parallel, horizontal welds
- Designed using Inelastic Method
- Calculations per the 2018 International Building Code (IBC) which references AISC 360-16, which is
a part of the 15th Edition of the Steel Construction Manual. Tables, figures, sections, and equations
shown below refer to it.

- The critical weld segment is located in the "Bottom" weld at its "Right End" segment. It will reach its
deformation resulting in fracture, ∆ u , before any other weld segment since it has the minimum value
for ∆ u / c.
- To determine the weld reactions in the tables below, will use values for the standard unit weld
(F EXX,unit = 70 ksi and wunit = 1/16 ") then will adjust for the actual values used for F EXX and w
when determining Rn
