OE 5540 CONCEPTUAL DESIGN OF MARINE STRUCTURES
Tutorial II
1. Calculate height of water ballast required at bottom of SPAR for GM to be positive. The SPAR diameter is
20m and the draft is 150m and the freeboard is 25m. The superstructure weight of 10000 MT and weight of
Spar is to be assumed as 50% of superstructure weight.
2. Design a breakwater armour using tetrapod for a design wave height of 5.8m and period of 10 sec. The
water depth is 10m. Assume the stability coefficient as 8 for the tetrapod. Use Hudson Formula. Draw the
cross section of breakwater with toe protection if the top road width is 6m and the slope of the armour is 1 :
2. Crest height shall be at least twice the wave height.
3. Calculate the crest height of breakwater required for limiting the water over topping less than 10 litres/sec.
The wave height and period are 9.8m and 14 sec respectively. The slope of the breakwater is 1 : 1.5 and
the height of berm is 3 m above the seabed. The water depth at the location of breakwater is 20m.
4. Compare the design of concrete armour unit size using Hudson Formula and Van Der Meer Formula if the
following details pertaining to a breakwater are given.
Water depth = 18m
Crest Elevation = 10m
Wave height = 5.8m
Wave period = 10 sec
Permeability coefficient = 0.5
Storm duration = 3 hours
Damage Level = 6
KD to be used with Hudson formula = 15 (for Accropode II)
5. Calculate the armour size of Tetrapod is to be used instead of Accropode II. The KD value for Tetrapodes is
to be taken as 8.
