Childhood shows the man as morning shows the day. A
whole day can be seen in the morning. Similarly,
childhood indicates the future life of a child.
On the other hand, if a child looks promising or bright,
we reasonably feel that the child will grow to be a bright
person. Early brilliance is only an indicator that the child
may prove to grow great and brilliant. Thus the
statement is only partially true.
2. Charity begins at home:
The proverb charity begins at home is very true. The
best way to demonstrate this is through sharing. When
each member of a family shares his/her belongings with
other members in the family, he/she learns the concept
of giving to others.
Similarly, if we learn to care for family members at
home, we will naturally learn to show concern for people
in need outside our need.
3. Knowledge is power:
The proverb "Knowledge is power" means that
knowledge is more powerful than physical strength. No
individual or nation can prosper in life without
knowledge. There is no end to knowledge. There is no
limit to what a person can learn.
Even big problems can be solved if we have the
knowledge of solving them. Development is possible by
knowledge and not by physical strength.
4. Honesty is the best policy:
Honesty is a good virtue. It is the true conduct of our
words, thoughts and action. It helps us to prosper in life.
This is true in every field. An honest person is respected
by all.
Honesty is always paying. Moreover, an honest public
servant is rewarded by the government. This is true in
every walk of life. We should walk along the honest path
of life in all circumstances.
5. Rome was not built in a day:
Rome was once the most prosperous empire in the
world. It flourished in all around glory and greatness. But
it did not attain its glory and greatness in a day. It was
the fruit of long years and many generations.
The success of life depends upon hard labour and
consistent effort. Great things can be achieved only by
perseverance and hard labour. Success in life does not
come in a day. It requires years of patient labour and
hard work.
6. A friend in need is a friend indeed:
Man wants people with whom he can mix and talk. They
are his companions. Among them there might be one or
two whom he likes. He is called a friend.
On the other hand, a true friend is very rare in this
world. Some only come to satisfy their selfish motives.
But a true friend never leaves us in times of need and
danger. He remains faithful to us in our happiness and
sorrow alike.

7. No pains, no gains:
Life is not a bed of roses. It is full of thorns. We must
take pains to remove the thorns in our way. We must
overcome the difficulties and obstacles. Nothing great
and noble can be achieved without real suffering.
Every one of us should remember that we can't gain
any success in life without taking pains. There can be
really no gain without pain.
8. Cut your coat according to your cloth:
This proverb means that we should cut our coat
according to the size of the cloth-piece. As the size of a
coat depends upon the size of the cloth, our life also has
its limitations.
In every walk of life, we should weigh our capacity
before doing anything. It is better and wiser to realize
the limitations and to plan accordingly. Thus the proverb
teaches us the virtue of prudence and foresight.
9. Where there is a will, there is a way:
Everybody desires success, but few attain it. One of the
reasons is that most people lack the strength of will. A
weak-minded person is frightened away by the initial
difficulties.
 On the other hand, if a man faces the difficulties
bravely, he will be able to overcome them successfully.
So, one way should fail, we may take to another and
continue it till the object is fulfilled.

10. Make hay while the sun shines:

The proverb means that we must not let any opportunity
slip. Who knows what may happen to us even tomorrow?
So, if we miss an opportunity today, we may not be able
to avail ourselves tomorrow at all.
On the other hand, opportunities do not always come.
If we miss one opportunity, we may miss it forever and
suffer in consequence. Therefore, we must always take
full and prompt advantage of any opportunity that may
come to our life.
11. Failures are the pillars of success:
Human life is full of ups and downs. In our life, it is quite
natural that we may fail once or twice or several times.
But we should not give up our attempts. If we try again
and again, we are sure to succeed in the long run.
Failures are generally looked down upon as unwanting.
But failures teach us to be patient and persevering. So,
every failure has the seed of success ingrained in it.

12. Necessity is the mother of invention:

The proverb means that when something really has to
be done, we find a way of doing it. The feeling of want is
thus at the root of all discoveries and inventions in this
world.
Primitive men felt the want of shelter, food, clothes
and protection from wild animals. As civilization
progressed, men felt more wanted. So we find that the
story of the progress of human civilization is the story of
one invention after another under the pressure of
necessity.
13. A little learning is a dangerous thing:
This proverb means that superficial and shallow
knowledge is a source of danger. A man who knows
only a little, talks as if he knows everything. He always
boasts of his knowledge.
On the other hand, a really learned man is humble
about his knowledge. He is not proud of his knowledge.
He finds that the more he knows, the more there is to
know. True knowledge imparts the virtue of humanity.
14. Self-help is the best help.
Answer: Everybody wants succeed, but not all achieve it.
One of the reasons is that there are men who do not
expert themselves, but depend on others. Actually help
from others is most uncertain.
On the contrary, success in life does not come of itself.
We can succeed only by honest and sincere labour. It is
the only key to succeed in life. God really helps those
who help themselves.
15. United we stand, divided we fall Or Union is strength.
Answer: This proverb holds out an important lesson for
us. If we stand united, no one can do us any harm. Even
if anyone tries to do any harm to us, we can unitedly
fight against him and defeat him.
Moreover, if the people of a country are united, no
enemy country can dare to attack it. They cannot
enslave the people of a country if the stand united in the
face of invasion.

16. A stitch in time saves nine.

Answer: If a piece of cloth is torn, even slightly, it should
be stitched at once. Otherwise tear will get wider and
wider and may require many stitches to repair it. So, the
proverb teaches us to take prompt action against all ills
at their earlier stage.
When a person feels ill, he should take proper steps
from the very first to control the illness. If neglected at
this stage, it may take deep root and cannot be shaken
off.
17. All that glitters is not gold.
Answer: Gold is a bright metal and very valuable. But
there are many worthless things looking equally bright
like gold. But they are not as valuable as gold. So, the
proverb teaches us that we should not judge things by
their outward appearance.
Moreover, a person may be well-dressed and may look
like a gentleman; but he may be a thief. On the other
hand, a food sweet to the taste may be injurious to
health.
18. Example is better than precept.
Answer: This proverb means that concrete examples are
better than abstract orders. Generally we speak of many
noble qualities. We may also tell people that they should
acquire those qualities. But it may or may not have any
effect.
On the contrary, a man who smokes constantly cannot
tell others to abstain from smoking. Besides, a man who
habitually tells a lie has no right to advise others to
speak the truth.

19. Empty vessels make much noise.

Answer: This proverb means that those who have
shallow knowledge are very showy and aggressive. In
fact, their learning is very insignificant and shallow. So,
they always pretend to be greater than what they
actually are.
On the other hand, the learned and wise people have
depth and understanding. They do not shout and
clamour to the people to recognize greatness.
20. A rolling stone gathers no moss.
Answer: Moss gathers on a stone that is stationary, but
not on one that is always on the move. Similarly,
persons that are always changing from one occupation
to another can never prosper.
 On the contrary, a person who sticks to one thing in
spite of initial difficulties is sure to succeed in the end.
He may fail once or twice, or even repeatedly. But he
continues in it and profits by the experience gained.
21. Slow and steady wins the race.
Answer: We often see a person fail though he is
intelligent and has abilities. We also sometimes see a
person of average abilities succeed. The result is that
the first person could not do any of his works well.
In other words, the successful man of average merits
takes up only one thing at a time and pursues it steadily
with keen attention. It is this steadiness with undivided
attention that brings him success.

22. Fortune favours the brave.

In this world, those people succeed in life who expert
themselves. Generally people who are hard-working and
courageous can attain success in life. Moreover, fortune
crowns the efforts of those who work tirelessly with
courage and devotion.
In fact, luck does not favour those who simply idle
away their time. Success in life is often elusive thing. To
succeed in life, we must expert ourselves. We must also
be not afraid of bearing a risk.
23. Variety is the spice of life.
Answer: Variety relieves the dullness of life. This many-
sidedness of life is linked to spice that makes food
palatable. We know that “All work and no play make
Jack a dull boy”.
This proverb means that after hard work, people
require some relief. This relief adds joy to work. It also
allows men to work with better stamina and greater zeal.
24. Look before we leap.
Answer: The saying here is a warning against hasty
action. Some people are impulsive by nature or over
confident of their abilities. No sooner does an idea occur
in their minds than they begin it without any thought.
Even if we succeed in a work, this success will be
worse than failure if it produces undesirable
consequences. Far from finding joy in it, we shall regret
it deeply. So, before we act we should carefully consider
everything about the action.

25. Prevention is better than cure.

Answer: This proverb holds well in every sphere of life.
We should try to prevent the occurrence of a trouble at
the beginning. It is better not to allow a bad habit creep
into our character at all than trying to shake it off after it
has crept into our character.
In fact, men should always be cautious to stop a bad
habit at the initial stage of all troubles. The least chance
of the occurrence of any trouble should be avoided in a
way that would stop its occurrence.
