WHAT IS A SENTENCE?
In simple terms, a sentence is a set of words that contain:
1. a subject (what the sentence is about, the
topic of the sentence), and
2. a predicate (what is said about the
subject)
A sentence is a combination of words put together
to convey an idea, a fact, a question, a thought, a
request or a command. Does that mean that you

WHAT IS A PARAGRAPH?

reader where the subdivisions of an essay begin and
end, and thus help the reader see the organization
of the essay and grasp its main points.
Paragraphs can contain many different kinds of
information. A paragraph could contain a series of
brief examples or a single long illustration of a
general point. It might describe a place, character, or process; narrate a series of
events; compare or contrast two or more things; classify items into categories; or
describe causes and effects. Regardless of the kind of information they contain, all
paragraphs share certain characteristics. One of the most important of these is a
topic sentence.
WHAT IS AN ESSAY?
An essay is a concise piece of nonfiction writing that aims to either inform the reader
about a topic or argue a particular perspective. It can
either be formal or informal in nature. Most academic
essays are highly formal, whereas informal essays are
commonly found in journal entries, social media, or
even blog posts.

can cover a vast range of topics.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A SENTENCE AND A PARAGRAPH?

Length: A sentence is the smallest unit of a written piece that expresses a complete
thought. It typically consists of a subject and a predicate. On the other hand, a
paragraph is a group of sentences that revolve around a particular topic or idea. It is
longer than a sentence and provides more detailed information.
Structure: A sentence follows a specific grammatical structure, including a subject,
verb, and sometimes an object. It is usually self-contained and can stand alone,
conveying a complete idea. In contrast, a paragraph consists of multiple sentences
that are connected and organized coherently. It often begins with a topic sentence
that introduces the main idea and is followed by supporting sentences that provide
further details, evidence, or examples.
Content: A sentence typically conveys a singular thought or message. It can be a
statement, a question, a command, or an exclamation. Its purpose is to convey a
concise idea or information. On the other hand, a paragraph presents a more
comprehensive and developed thought. It may contain several sentences that
explore a topic, explain a concept, describe an event, or argue a point. A paragraph
allows for a deeper exploration and analysis of a subject.
