During the passage of Hato over Hong Kong, at least 129 people were
injured. Besides, there were over 5,300 reports of fallen trees, many incidents of
falling objects, one report of landslide as well as a number of flooding reports.
Storm surge induced by Hato resulted in serious flooding and damages in a
number of coastal areas, including Tai O, Cheung Chau, Heng Fa Chuen, Siu Sai
Wan, Lei Yue Mun, Tseung Kwan O, and Yuen Long.
Transport services in Hong Kong were seriously affected by Hato. Train
services along the open sections of MTR were once suspended. Facilities at a
number of ferry terminals were damaged, while many flights were cancelled.

chart: 1 mark; correct line graph: 1 mark)
b. (i) Landslide
(ii) Summer / Hong Kong receives a large amount of rainfall which is
concentrated in summer. The rainfall in Hong Kong in summer reaches
1,898mm. / When rainwater seeps into soil, the weight of soil increases and the
cohesion among soil particles decreases. / Rainwater will reduce the friction of
slopes, resulting in a higher chance of landslide occurrence.
c. Lead to casualties and loss of property. / Bury the buildings and vehicles near the
slope. / Bury the road surface, resulting in traffic congestion. / Damage electric
cables and water pipes, which will cause the cut-off of electricity and water
supplies. (Any two)
d. The Geotechnical Engineering Office (GEO) carries out various reinforcement
works, regular inspection and maintenance on the dangerous public slopes. / The
Buildings Department requires the owners of dangerous private slopes to arrange
slope maintenance to ensure slope safety. / The government requires that all
construction projects have to be approved by the GEO. Construction of residential

units, roads, etc. should be avoided on or around the slopes with high risk of
landslides. / The government conducts detailed surveys and adopts sufficient slope
reinforcement measures before developing slopes. (Any two)
Question 2
a. Typhoon Hato was formed on 21 August over the ocean, and then moved to the
west-northwest and struck Hong Kong.
b. (i) It was hot in Hong Kong when Typhoon Hato moved closer to Hong
Kong. / As it further approached Hong Kong, its spiral rainbands brought stormy
weather to Hong Kong. / The typhoon started to weaken as it reached the inland
area; both the wind speed and rainfall in Hong Kong reduced.
(ii) At least 129 people were injured. / Strong winds downed trees. / Strong
winds caused objects to fall. / Landslide occurred. / Storm surge was induced,
resulting in serious flooding and damages in a number of coastal areas. / Land, air
and sea transport services were seriously affected. (Any three)
c. Set up typhoon monitoring and warning systems. / Educate the public about the
measures in response to typhoons. / Improve building structures. / Build flood
control facilities. / Establish a comprehensive contingency mechanism. / Conduct
slope reinforcement works. (Any three or other reasonable answers)
Question 3
a. Java is located near the boundaries of the Eurasia Plate and the Indo-Australian
Plate. / The two plates were always colliding with each other, putting the rocks
on the boundaries under continuous pressure. / At last, the rocks were broken and
displaced, releasing massive energy suddenly. / The energy spread in the form of
seismic waves, causing earthquake.
b. (i) People got injured or killed. / Buildings collapsed.
(ii) Time of occurrence of earthquake: The earthquake occurred at night when
many residents were sleeping and could not escape in time. / Magnitude of
earthquake: The earthquake with a magnitude of 6.5 caused serious damages. /
Building structures: The houses had poor structures without earthquake-proof
design, which collapsed easily during the earthquake. / Efficiency of rescue
teams: The rescue teams did not have sufficient trainings and rescue equipment
to carry out rescue work. (Any two or other reasonable answers)

c. Use advanced seismograph to monitor the movement of the crust. Once the sign
of earthquake is found, earthquake warning should be issued early to allow
people to be evacuated as soon as possible in order to reduce deaths and
injuries. / Carry out earthquake drills and education to enhance the public
awareness of disaster prevention. / Avoid building facilities with potential
dangers in the earthquake-prone regions. / Reserve open space and provide clear
escape routes to people to allow them to escape to a safe place before and after
earthquakes. / Build earthquake-proof buildings. / Set up post-disaster
emergency relief system. (Any three)
d. There are abundant natural resources in Indonesia, such as fertile soil for
agricultural development, attracting people to stay there. / The pleasant climate
in Indonesia attracts people to stay there. / Many citizens have got used to the
living environment of their communities. As they are not willing to leave their
families and friends, they choose to stay in their home towns. / Many countries
