Instructions: (Read carefully)

1) Check that this question paper contains FOUR pages.
2) Check that there are 14 questions in all.
3) Write your name carefully.
4) Check whether you have attempted all the required questions before submitting.

PART I (10 Marks)

Answer all questions.
While answering questions in this Part, indicate briefly your working and reasoning,
wherever required.

Question 1 – 1M X 10 = 10 M
1. Find the complement of the following Boolean expression using [1]
De Morgan’s law:
F(P,Q,R) = P + (Q’ .R)
2. Find the dual of: (A + 0)  (B + 1) = A [1]
3. State whether the following proposition is a tautology, contradiction or a
contingency:
F = (P => Q) V (Q => ~P) [1]
4. Study the diagram given below and answer the questions that follow: [1]

(i) Name the basic gate which is represented by the diagram.

(ii) What will be the value of X when A=1 and B=0 ?
5. State the properties of zero in Boolean algebra. [1]
6. Name and draw the logic gate represented by the following truth table, where A
and B are inputs and X is the output. [1]

7. Write the canonical POS expression of: F(P, Q) =  (0,2 ) [1]

8. Convert the following expression into its canonical POS form: [1]
F(X, Y, Z) = (X+Yʹ ) • (Yʹ+Z)
9. Verify the following proposition with the help of a truth table: [1]
( P ˄ Q ) ˅ ( P ˄ ~Q ) = P
10. Write the minterm of F(A,B,C,D) when A=1, B=0, C=0,D=1 [1]

PART II (15 Marks)

Attempt any 3 questions. Ensure to attempt all the parts of the question.
11. Given the Boolean function F(A, B, C, D) = Ʃ (0,2,4,8,9,10,12,13).
(i) Reduce the above expression by using 4-variable Karnaugh map, showing the various groups (i.e.
octal, quads and pairs). [4]
(ii) Draw the logic gate diagram for the reduced expression. Assume that the
variables and their complements are available as inputs. [1]

12. Given the Boolean function: F(A, B, C, D) = 𝝅(3,4,5,6,7,10,11,14,15).

(i) Reduce the above expression by using 4-variable Karnaugh map, showing the various groups (i.e.
octal, quads and pairs). [4]
(ii) Draw the logic gate diagram for the reduced expression. Assume that the
variables and their complements are available as inputs. [1]

13. A training institute intends to give scholarships to its students as per the criteria given below: [5]
• The student has excellent academic record but is financially weak.
OR
• The student does not have an excellent academic record and belongs to a backward class.
OR
• The student does not have an excellent academic record and is physically impaired.

The inputs are:

(In all the above cases 1 indicates yes and 0 indicates no).
Output: X [1 indicates yes, 0 indicates no for all cases]
Draw the truth table for the inputs and outputs given above and write the SOP expression for
X(A,F,C,I).
14. What is an Encoder? Draw the Encoder circuit to convert A-F hexadecimal numbers to binary. State
an application of a Multiplexer. [5]
