5. Which of the following processes is NOT included in generating electricity from
geothermal power plants?
A. Wells are drilled deep into the Earth to pump steam to the surface.
B. When the water reaches the surface, the drop-in pressure causes the water
to turn into steam.
C. The steam spins the turbine which is connected to the generator that
produces electricity.
D. Cooling tower cools the steam which is returned as a waste to the
environment.
The teacher will present the lesson objectives.

4. EXPLAIN
Analysis:
1. What is geothermal energy?
2. How can we generate energy from the heat of the Earth?
Abstraction:
Geothermal Energy
Comes from the Greek words’ “geo” meaning earth and “therme” meaning heat. It is
a renewable source that can be collected for human use.
Heat generated within the Earth is called geothermal energy.
Philippines is listed as the third largest producer of geothermal energy for power
generation (NS Energy 2020).
Three geothermal power plants included in the world’s largest geothermal power
plants.
1. Makban Geothermal Complex located in Batangas produces 458 MW
(megawatts) output capacity;
2. Tiwi Geothermal Complex situated in Albay with 289 MW; and
3. Malitbog Geothermal Power Station with 232.5 MW situated in the Province
of Leyte.
You can find a chart below presenting the world’s 10 biggest geothermal energy
plants (Climate Care 2016).

Forty percent (40%) of our renewable energy resource is from geothermal energy
(Department of Energy n.d.). This means that geothermal energy is much utilized in
our country.
There are two ways where we can get geothermal energy: through
1. geothermal power plants and
2. geothermal heat pumps.
The two differ in the depth of the source of heat.
Geothermal power plants make use of the heat deep within the Earth to produce
steam to make electricity.
Geothermal heat pumps use the heat near the Earth’s surface to heat water.
How is Geothermal Energy Generated?
1. Geothermal Power Plant
Below are the steps to produce electricity in geothermal power plant (EPA 2017):
1. Hot water is pumped to the surface of the Earth through the wells drilled
into the Earth.
2. Water turns into steam when the hot water reaches the surface, because of
the drop in pressure.
3. The steam turns a turbine, which is connected to a generator that produces
electricity.
4. The steam condenses to water in the cooling tower.
5. The cooled water is pumped back into the Earth to begin the cycle
again.

2. Geothermal Heat Pump
5. ELABORATE “Fill Me”
Activity: In a ½ sheet of paper crosswise.
Direction: Read about how a geothermal plant works and choose the appropriate word to
complete the statement. Write your answers in the separate answer sheet.
Electricity generator heat
hot water wells
steam surface turbine
volcanic cold lava
Geothermal power plants are used to generate (1) __________. Geothermal energy is
the (2) __________ that comes from below the ground in areas of (3) __________ activity.
(4) __________are drilled into a known geothermal reservoir. Cold (5) __________is
pumped under pressure through the injection well into a layer of (6) __________ rocks. The
rocks heat the water and the hot water then returns to the (7) __________. The decrease in the
pressure causes the water to turn into (8) __________. The steam turns the (9) __________,
which generates electricity in a (10) __________. The steam cools and turns back to water
which can then be used again in the system to continue the process.
6. EVALUATE “Quiz”
Read the questions carefully. Choose the letter of the best answer and write it on a
separate sheet of paper.
1. The following is/are the sign/s of the large amount of heat lying in Earth’s interior.
I. Volcanoes
II. Geysers
