ME 570: Engineering Analysis I

Homework 1
due 09-07-22 (by 5:00pm)

1. Find the Laplace Transform of the following function using the defini-
tion of the Laplace Transform– also indicate the interval of s in which
the transform is defined.

f (t) = t2 , t < 1,
= 1, t ≥ 1

2. Find the Laplace Transform of the following functions using proper-

ties of the Laplace Transform.
Rt
(i) 0 τ 2 sin(2τ ) dτ
(ii) sinh(2t)u(t − π/2)
(iii) t ∗ e−3t (∗ represents convolution, not multiplication)
(iv) t sin t + cos t
3. Find the Inverse Laplace Transform of the following functions using
properties of the Laplace Transform.
(i)
1
(s2 + ω 2 )2
(ii)
e−2s
s2 − 64
4. Solve the following initial value problems using Laplace transforms.
(i)

y ′′ + 9y = 8 sin t, if 0 < t < π,

= 0, if t > π

with y(0) = 0 and y ′ (0) = 4.

(ii)
y ′′ + 16y = 4δ(t − π), y(0) = 0, y ′ (0) = 1
5. Obtain the solution to the following initial value problem for a second
order linear ODE with variable coefficient, using Laplace Transforms.
t
y ′′ + y ′ − y = 10, y(0) = y ′ (0) = 0
2
6. Laplace Transforms can sometimes also be used to solve boundary
value problems. Using LT, obtain the solution to the following prob-
lem. The static deflection y(x) of a uniform beam of length L = 1m
clamped at both ends and governed by the following ODE and bound-
ary conditions:

d4 y
A = w(x), y(0) = y(1) = y ′ (0) = y ′ (1) = 0,
dx4
where A = EI is a constant and w(x) is the load distribution given
by

w(x) = w0 (1 − 2x), 0 < x ≤ 1/2,

= 0, 1/2 < x < 1

7. Solve the following integral equation using Laplace Transforms:

Z
8 t
f (t) = 1 + t − (τ − t)3 f (τ )dτ
3 0
