School Grade 8
Lab Report

I. Title: Does the Shape of Ice Affect the Melting Rate?

II. Purpose: The purpose was to see if the shape of ice would affect how fast it melts.

III. Hypothesis: The square ice will melt the fastest because it covers more area. Since it

covers more area, the ice will be thinner.

IV. Materials:

● Square container.

● Rectangle container.

● 1 cup (measuring cup)

● 1 teaspoon.

V. Procedure:

1. Get square and rectangle containers.

2. Fill containers with 1 cup of water and freeze.

3. Wait until frozen.

4. Take out and wait 10 minutes.

5. Measure how much ice has melted.

6. Repeat steps 4 and 5, 20 times.

7. Record results.

VI. Results: On separate sheet.

VII. Conclusion: My hypothesis was not correct. The rectangular ice melted faster. If I were

to do this experiment again, I would use more shapes like a circle or a triangle. I would
also use something other than water. I could use salt water instead. I do not think the

shape of ice affects the melting rate. I think this because the ices melted at about the same

rate.
