of artificial intelligence (AI) in student studies. The goal was to gather
information directly from students across different departments about their
experiences and opinions regarding AI tools.

14
8.1 Research Design
For this study, I used a descriptive survey method. This means I designed a
questionnaire to collect data from students about their use of AI tools. Surveys
are a great way to gather a lot of information quickly and efficiently. They allow
me to reach many students and learn about their experiences in their own
words.

The survey was structured to include both multiple-choice questions and

open-ended questions. This approach helped me collect both quantitative data
(numbers and statistics) and qualitative data (thoughts and opinions).

8.2 Survey Instrument

I created a paper survey that included
several sections to cover different
aspects of AI usage:

Demographic Information

The first part of the survey asked for

basic information about the students,
including:

● Age: To analyze if different age

groups use AI differently.
● Gender: To see if there are any
differences in experiences based on gender.
● Field of Study: This helped categorize responses from various
departments, such as Science, Arts, Business, and Engineering.

This demographic data is important because it allows me to understand if and

how AI tool usage varies across different groups of students.

15
AI Usage Questions

In this section, I focused on understanding how students interact with AI tools:

● Frequency of Use: I asked students how often they use AI tools, with
options like Daily, Weekly, Occasionally, and Never. This question helps
to see how common the use of AI is among students.

● Types of AI Tools Used: I provided a list of various AI tools, such as

chatbots, tutoring apps, and educational software, for students to check
off which ones they use. This helps identify which tools are most popular
and effective.

● Purpose of Use: I included questions about why students use these

tools. For example, do they use them for homework help, exam
preparation, or research? Understanding the purpose of usage can shed
light on the effectiveness of these tools.

Effectiveness Assessment

To evaluate how helpful students find AI tools, I included several questions:

● Helpfulness Rating: Students rated the helpfulness of AI tools on a

scale from 1 to 5, where 1 means "not helpful at all" and 5 means
"extremely helpful." This rating system allows for easy comparison
across responses.

● Impact on Academic Performance: I asked a simple Yes/No question

to see if students believe that using AI tools has helped them improve
their grades or overall performance. This question gets straight to the
point of whether students feel AI is beneficial for their studies.

16
Open-Ended Feedback

Finally, I provided space for students to share their thoughts in their own
words. This section allowed them to express their personal experiences with
AI tools, any challenges they face, and suggestions for improvement.
Open-ended feedback is invaluable as it can highlight issues that I might not
have considered in the survey design.

8.3 Data Collection Method

To gather responses, I visited various departments at my institution. Here’s
how I went about it:

In-Class Visits

I attended classes in different departments, such as:

● Science: To see how students in technical fields use AI.

● Arts: To understand if and how creativity interacts with AI tools.
● Business: To find out how future business leaders perceive AI.

During these visits, I introduced myself and explained the purpose of the
survey. I emphasized the importance of their feedback and how it could
contribute to better educational tools. After explaining, I handed out the
surveys, allowing students to complete them right there in class. This method
encouraged immediate responses, and many students appreciated the
opportunity to share their thoughts.

Personal Engagement

I made sure to engage personally with students. I approached them directly,

making myself available to answer any questions they had about the survey.
By building a rapport, I helped them feel more comfortable sharing their
thoughts. I reassured them that their responses would remain confidential,
which encouraged them to be honest in their feedback.

17
Survey Collection Period

The survey was open for 7 days. This time frame allowed me to gather a
diverse set of responses. During this period, I regularly reminded students
about the survey when I visited classes and events. I aimed to collect at least
40 completed surveys to ensure that the data would be meaningful and
reliable.

8.4 Data Analysis

After collecting the surveys, I analyzed the data carefully:

Quantitative Analysis

For the multiple-choice questions, I calculated basic statistics like averages

and percentages. This quantitative data gave me a clear overview of how
many students use AI tools and how they rate their effectiveness.

For the open-ended responses, I read

through the comments and looked for
common themes. I identified recurring
ideas and sentiments, which helped me
understand students’ feelings about AI
tools in more depth.

Ethical Considerations

Throughout the research process, I

made sure to follow ethical guidelines:

● Informed Consent: I clearly

explained the survey’s purpose and ensured that students understood
their participation was voluntary.
● Anonymity: I assured participants that their identities would remain
confidential, which is crucial for encouraging honest responses.

18
9. Limitations of the Study
While this study provides valuable insights, there are some limitations to keep
in mind:

● Sample Bias: The survey might not represent all students since it mainly
included those who are interested in AI. This could mean that the views
of students who don’t use AI tools are not reflected.

● Self-Reported Data: The information collected was based on what

students said about their usage. Sometimes, people might exaggerate
how often they use something or how helpful they find it.

● Narrow Focus: The survey looked at specific AI tools, so it doesn’t cover

all the possible AI applications in education. Future studies could explore
a wider range of tools and their impacts.

● Time Limitations: The 7 days spent collecting responses might not have
captured the full diversity of students. Some classes or events may have
been missed during this time.

● Changing Technology: Since AI technology is constantly evolving, the

findings may become outdated quickly. Ongoing research will be
essential to keep up with these changes.
