Functions Of The Occlusal Rest

1- Main function is Support
2-Transmitting vertical stress along the
long axis of the tooth
3- Secure the clasp in its proper position
4- Distributing the occlusal load
5- Resistance to lateral displacement of the
prosthesis box shaped preparation
6- It May Act As Indirect Retention

Forms of occlusal rests

I- Saucer
II- Other Forms
1-Box shape
2-Extended occlusal rest
3- Onlays
4- Embrassure rest
5- Interproximal occlusal rest

Special considerations of Rests

1- Boxed shaped occlusal rest
• The use of a box-shaped rest seat results
in damaging horizontal loads on the
abutment tooth.
• These rest seats should be restricted to
tooth-supported dentures where the
periodontal health of the abutment teeth is
good.
• Provide Guide-surfaces
• Employed Only on a Perfectly Periodontally
Healthy abutment of a bounded saddle • Induces forces on
• Helps in Preventing Lateral Movement of the abutment
the Denture
• It Provides denture Retention

15
10/04/1446

5-Resistance to lateral displacement of the

prosthesis by box shaped rests. but applying
damaging horizontal forces on abutment teeth

2-Tipped Molar
(Mesially Inclined Mandibular molar)

a- An Additional Occlusal Rest in

the Distal Fossa

17
10/04/1446

b- Extended occlusal rest From

Mesial Marginal Ridge to Distal
Triangular Fossa

3- Onlay rest Such As Full Veneer

Crown or Onlay
Increase the reduced V.D
Reduce cusp angle
2 or more teeth can be splinted by
onlays

18
10/04/1446

4- Interproximal Occlusal Rest

Seats

5- Embrasure Rest

A Gap Between Two Molars

19
10/04/1446

a- One simple circle clasp, and the rest recesses

should be fashioned on the two abutment teeth

B- two simple circle clasps jointed

together, and the occlusal rest can be
used to bridge a gap between teeth

20
10/04/1446

6-Rotated Teeth
1-Cover the crown with a restoration •
2-Alter its axial surface •
3-Place the occlusal rest anywhere on the •
tooth surface

II. lingual rests

1- Cingulum rest 2- Canine ledge 3- Ball rest

Cingulum rest
“ It is a rounded inverted v-shaped preparation made
on the lingual surface of anterior teeth at the junction
of its gingival and middle thirds. It is better placed on
cast restorations (cast veneered crowns, ¾ crowns
and inlays).”

III- Incisal rest seat

“ It is a saddle rounded notch placed
approximately 1.5- 2 mm from the
incisal angle of the tooth. It is beveled
laterally, labially and lingually. It is
2.5 mm wide and 1.5 mm deep.”
Indications :
1- in lower anterior teeth due to
insufficient enamel thickness
lingually.
.

28
10/04/1446

Incisal rests

Preferred sites for rest

placement
1- The molars and premolars are preferred
than anterior teeth.

2- A canine is preferred over an incisor.

When canine is absent, multiple lingual
rests are prepared on anteriors.

3- The lingual rest is preferable to an incisal

rest, because it is :

a- placed closer to the horizontal axis of

rotation of the abutment tooth, thereby
reducing tipping .

b- more esthetic

Where should I put my rest ?

31

Placing the occlusal rest away

from the distal extension base
(far zone)

By changing the direction of torque on the

abutment from the distal to the mesial side
of the tooth, the resistance to torque action
will be applied from the neighboring teeth
