Introduction
• The origin of Situational approach began with the work of British
applied linguists in the 1920s and 1930s.
• Two leaders of this movement were Harold Palmer and A. S.
Hornby.
• The Oral Approach and Situational Language Teaching relied on the
structural view of language. Both speech and structure were seen to
be the basis of language and, especially, speaking ability.
Needs Analyses is the formal process that sits alongside requirements
analysis and focuses on the human elements of the requirements.

2) Employment & Occupational needs
3) Communication needs
Target Situational Analysis
• Who is your target learner?
• What do you know about your target learner’s goals?
• It deals with the analysis of learner’s target needs and mainly focuses on
student’s needs.
• For second language learners their target is also different for examples,

2) Medical and Engineers – English for their special field

Probable Situations
• At the school and college
• At the hotel
• At the restaurant
• At the airport
• At the shopping mall
• At the bank / Post office
• At the hospital
Teacher’s role

Conclusion
• Sill today, it is an ideal approach for language acquisition but it has some
limitations. But through this approach, we can not nullify all the
limitations but we can minimize some limitations and will use this
approach in proper way for language learning and will help to speak
English in our day to day situations.
