SCIENCE CLASSIFICATION AND ENTYMOLOGY

Garlic, scientifically known as


Allium sativum, is a species of
bulbous flowering plant in the
genus Allium and belongs to the
family Amaryllidaceae. The word
“garlic” originates from the Old
English “gārlēac”, which combines
“gar” (spear) and “lēac” (leek), referring to the spear-like shape of its
cloves. In the Philippines, garlic plays a significant role in cuisine and
traditional medicine, with the Ilocos Region being the largest garlic-
producing area. The family Amaryllidaceae comprises about 57
genera and over 500 species, with Allium being the largest genus
Garlic is typically white, but it can also 4 have purple or pink hues
depending on the variety.
