TUTORIAL 1 - Solutions

TUTORIAL 1

Q1: A wooden ring with a circular cross-section of 300 mm2 and a mean
diameter of 200 mm has a coil of 800 turns uniformly wound around it. If the
current through the coil is 2.0 Amps, calculate:
a) Total ampere turns (or magnetomotive force (mmf))
b) Magnetic field intensity
c) Magnetic field density, produced (assume relative permeability of wood =1)

• SOLUTION
• H = 𝑁𝐼
𝑙
• where:
• 𝑙= 𝜋𝑑 = 𝜋𝑥0.2𝑚 = 0.628𝑚
800𝑥2
• H= = 2548 𝐴𝑡/𝑚
0.628
• Therefore,
• B= 𝜇𝑟 𝜇0 𝐻 = 1𝑥4𝜋 × 10−7 𝑥 2548 = 0.0032 𝑊𝑏/𝑚2
Q2: A mild steel ring of 30 cm mean circumference has a cross-
sectional area of 6 cm2 and has a winding of 500 turns. The ring is cut
through at a point so as to provide an air-gap of 1 mm in the magnetic
circuit. It is found that a current of 4 A in the winding produces a
magnetic field density of 1 Tesla in the [Link]:
a) Total magnetomotive force (mmf)
b) Magnetic field intensity across the air-gap
c) Magnetomotive force (mmf) or ampere turns across the airgap
d) Relative permeability of mild steel
e) Inductance (i.e. self-inductance of the coil)
Q3: A coil of 800 turns is uniformly wound around an iron ring of diameter
40 cm. The diameter of the iron is 2.0 cm. A second winding with 0.5mm
diameter is wound over the first one. If the mutual inductance between the
two windings is 0.28 H, calculate the number of turns of the second winding.
(Assume relative permeability of iron, 𝜇𝑟 = 800 and permeability of air is
4𝜋x10-7 )

𝑁2 ∅1 𝜇𝑟 𝜇0 𝐴𝑁2𝑁1 𝑑 𝑑𝐼1
• SOLUTION (M = ; M= ; (𝑁 ∅ ) =M )
𝐼1 𝑙 𝑑𝑡 2 1 𝑑𝑡
• 𝜇𝑟 = 800; 𝜇0 = 4𝜋x10-7
• 𝑙 =0.4𝜋 i. e. circumference of the ring = 1.257 m
0.02 2
• A=𝜋( ) = 0.000314

𝜇 𝜇 𝐴𝑁2𝑁1
• M = 𝑟 0 =0.28

• Therefore: 𝑁2 = 𝑀𝑥𝑙

Q4
Two coils, Coil 1 of 13000 turns and Coil 2 of 17000 turns, lie in parallel
planes so that 75% of flux produced in coil 1 links coil 2. It is found that
a current of 6 A in coil 1 produces a flux of 0.8 mWb while the same
current in coil 2 produces 1.0 mWb. Find the following

• (i) Coefficient of self-induction due to coil 1

• (ii) Coefficient of self-induction due to coil 2
• (iii) Coefficient of coupling of the two coils
• Solution
