The first part of the paper (chapter I) comprises the documentary study on shape memory alloys of class NiTi, within which we notice the following: A. Characterization of the SMA utilization domains and of the stresses to which the components of those materials are submitted: It comprises general information on the shape memory alloys: their initial form, later modified by plastic deformation, is regained under a heating; in a given range of temperatures, a sample of this material can have a plastic deformation up to 8% in cases of fully recoverable pulling by a subsequent heating. Next, there are some remarkable examples of applications, with divisions on great functional groups. The second part of the documentary group (B) deals with Specific features of SMAs and their structural characteristics It offers the underlying thermo-elastic martensitic transformation of the shape memory phenomenon, followed by the features of these materials and the thermomechanical conduct of the shape memory alloys. This sub-chapter also provides information on: equilibrium diagram of NiTi alloys, crystalline structure of the martensitic phase, physical and mechanical features of NiTi alloy electrical resistivity, mechanical characteristics, thermo-mechanical conduct, influence of the alloying elements upon the phase transformations in NiTi alloys, with a special
emphasize on the influence of NiTi alloys with Nb, the influence of alloying elements with interstitial position or those which create compounds (C, O, N, H). Chapter II presents Research materials and equipments used for the investigation of a NiTiNb shape memory alloy. It offers information on the potential usage of NiTiNb alloys and reasons for choosing for study an alloy with 2% Nb compared with the Nb alloys studied so far. Before the experimental studies of the project, the alloy was conceived, processed and investigated by electronic scanning microscopy and by optical microscopy. Chapter III presents our own experimental researches: samples of the Ni 50Ti48Nb2 shape memory allow were thermally treated at 800C for 12 h. These, as well as the rolled samples, were submitted to chemically aggressive environments such as: HNO3, H2SO4, NH4OH and the mass losses were gravimetrically recorded. The samples were inserted into NH4OH; no reaction was noticed. Later, they were inserted into H2SO4: it can be appreciated that the mass loss is significant, which led to the conclusion that this material should not be used for sulphur acid transportation circuits. The samples tested in HNO3 32.5% and 65% became passive after a relatively small mass loss after 50, 25 days respectively. Corrosion tests were also performed in HCl; the sample was destroyed after 8 days of chemical attack. After corrosion tests in different chemically aggressive environments, we can conclude that a coupling or a connector made from this alloy can be used for HNO3, NH4OH industrial transportation circuits, but not for H2SO4 and HCl.
