Student Guide to Beyond Labz Portal
New students may encounter challenges such as understanding the registration and activation processes, which involve sequential steps like verifying emails and inputting activation codes. Furthermore, navigating between different menus like Labz+, Groups, and Assignments, and ensuring proper installation of desktop applications for certain labs may be daunting. Additionally, familiarizing oneself with the functionalities of saving and sharing labs, and adequately using preset versus open-ended lab activities may require significant initial learning efforts .
Pre-configured lab activities provide structured guidance, ideal for students needing clear procedural instruction and consistency, thereby ensuring a standard learning outcome. Conversely, open-ended lab environments offer greater flexibility and creativity, fostering critical thinking skills as students explore without prescribed limits. However, the lack of structure can be challenging for some learners who benefit from more guided approaches. Both options are valuable, offering different learning experiences to accommodate diverse educational needs .
The Lab Book menu grants students access to their lab book directly from the portal, allowing efficient documentation and organization. Students can sort entries by lab bench, and have the option to toggle entry timestamps on or off. This functionality helps students manage and chronologically organize their lab work, making it easy to track progress and record experimental data systematically .
Labz+ offers the capability to save a lab at any point and share it with others through a URL link. It includes two menus: Lab Presets, which provides about 100 preset starting points sorted by lab bench, and My Saved Labs, where students can store and access their saved labs. This feature allows students to come back to specific points in an experiment or share their progress and results with teachers for feedback, aiding in collaborative and iterative learning .
The Lab Book menu allows students to directly access their lab book from the portal, enabling them to organize entries by lab bench. Teachers can view and add notes to these lab books at any time, providing ongoing feedback and support for students' learning. This feature fosters continuous communication and feedback, improving the educational experience by enabling teachers to actively participate in students' lab activities .
The Groups menu enables students to join a class group using an Invitation Code provided by their teacher. This functionality allows teachers to access students' Lab Books for monitoring progress and to send assignments to group members. By facilitating grouped interactions and centralizing management of student activities, the Groups menu aids in efficient classroom management and personalized instruction delivery .
Once registered and logged in, users need to enter or purchase an activation code to launch the labs. If provided by the school, the user clicks 'Activate License' to enter the code. If not, they must purchase a license independently, which involves entering credit card details to receive a personal license code via email. The activation code is then entered either in the 'Activate License' menu or in the 'Activation Codes' section of the online Profile page. License status and profile data can be confirmed from the menu available at the bottom left corner of the screen .
The Activities menu allows students to load specific lab activities instructed by teachers, offering step-by-step procedures in an easily accessible online format. Students can search activities by topic, level, or name, type answers directly into the worksheet form, and use the browser's print function to create PDFs for submission following the teacher's instructions. This digital organization simplifies both execution and submission of lab work .
Through the Assignments menu, teachers can create and allocate customized lab assignments to students within their class Group. This functionality allows for tailored instruction based on individual or group learning goals, providing specific feedback and resources in alignment with each student's learning pace. By enabling customization, the Assignments menu supports differentiated learning strategies and personalized educational experiences .
The necessity for desktop installations for Physics and Biology labs, which are not yet converted to Html5, implies that students must use Windows or Mac computers and download Beyond Labz Connect. This installation requirement may limit access for students without compatible systems or administrator privileges to install applications. However, once installed, users can launch an open-ended environment from the landing page, encouraging more comprehensive lab interactions compared to a solely web-based experience .
