Introduction
Areca leaf plates are a great alternative and polymer-based materials, as well as
paper-based products, which the world is worried with. For the production of these plates,
a completely natural process is used. Areca leaves that have fallen to the ground are
harvested from plantations. The areca leaf sheath was washed immersed in water for
about 15minutes before being shade dried for 30utes. Then, using the correspondingly
formed Machines, they are compressed various forms. They are then packaged according
to the customer's specifications. Each areca leaf plate manufacturing unit employee
people directly. There is an national effect of providing jobs for two more industrial area
is said for employment generation. In addition, there will be a workshed and labour at a
low price. Approximately 5400 million Areca Leaves can shred and treated as agro-waste
on 4 lakh hectares of Areca Crop.

These leaves have the potential to be turned into a value-added product. Some benefits of
areca leaf plates
• Suitable for hot, cold, and wet foods.
• It's light, solid, but not crushable
• At no point are chemicals, bleaching, PE (Poly Ethylene) coating, or wax coating
used.
• Microwave and fridge healthy.
• Holds liquid products without leaking for 4 hours.
It is environmentally safe, biodegradable, and compostable in mind the
environmental degradation and rising awareness among people h the trend of returning
back to nature can give a huge boom to the industry in future. Each year, a single Areca
leaf plate manufacturing unit requires195000 leaves. In this case approx 27700 plate.
Manufacturer units could de set up throughout India. in 27700, 1.5 lakh new jobs can be
created. Just 1500 units have been built in India so far. Around 1000 of these units are in
India's south. Tamil Nadu (Salem, Coimbatore) and Kerala are the main raw material
sources for south Indian units and Karnataka (Thumkur, Shimoga). There is currently no
substitute product on the market that can equal the special properties of natural areca palm
leaf plates. Areca leaf plates are constructed from the Areca Nut Tree's naturally shed leaf
sheaths. The areca leaves are simply gathered, pressure washed, scrubbed, sun dried, and
then assembled into suitable shaped plates using heat and pressure. Once used, plates can

be used as a good fertiliser to help plants flourish, as well as a good source of organic
manure. Plastic and paper plates are replaced by removable plates and cups. Natural,
compostable, and biodegradable materials with a chic appearance. Demand is also strong
within the region. It is an untapped industry, full of potential where the first mover

Statement of problem
Indian agriculture can play a vital role in economic development. It is there
agricultural production should be stepped up. The increase in agricultural production calls
for a simultaneous improvement in the marketing system. T for the country predominantly
dependent upon agriculture the efficient agriculture system is very essential and vital. The
areca leaf productions is facing ser threats and challenges. The farmers are so poverty
stricken and indebted. A consequence, the death toll of farmers' suicides is rapidly
increasing at alarming rate. The main problem is farmers don’t collect fallen leaf and if
they collect fallen leaf and store they don’t have enough space to store the leaf in a fungal
and bacterial safe place and protect it from moisture

Scope of study
This study is confined to Shivamogga district this study was conducted to know
how the areca plant leaf products are processed and problems faced by farmers in

Data collection
There are two types of data collection
Primary data
New data gathered to help solve the problem at hand. As compared to secondary
data which is previously gathered data. An example is information gathered by a
questionnaire. Qualitative or quantitative data that are newly collected in the course of
research, Consists of original information that comes from people and includes
information gathered from surveys, focus groups, independent observations and test
results. Data gathered by the researcher in the act of conducting research. Primary data is
basically collected by getting questionnaire filled by the respondents.

Secondary data
Information that already exists somewhere, having been collected for another
purpose. Sources include census reports, publications, and subscription services. There are
two types of secondary data: internal and external secondary data. Information compiled
inside or outside the organization for some purpose other than the current investigation
Researching information, which has already been published. Market information
compiled for purposes other than the current research effort; it can be internal data, such
as existing sales-tracking information, or it can be research conducted by someone else,
such as a market research company. The secondary data is also collected to support out
study from variouswebsites

planet in many ways. That is why many environmental enthusiasts have come forward to
denounce the usage of plastic products &the adoption of Eco Friendly Products like
compostable plates, bowls, cutlery, bags & food containers.

Areca Palm Leaf Plates are one such type of Disposable Plates that can be easily
used for weddings, parties, office events & daily uses. They can easily decompose into the
soil without harming Mother Earth in any way.

But, are these reasons enough to nudge you to replace your daily use plastic plates
with Areca-based eco-friendly plates?

It is high time that people start switching from toxic plastic products to eco- friendly
alternatives. Why?

NES Institute of Advanced Studies, Shivamogga 7

Our continuous dependence on plastic products is harming our Mother Earth,

polluting land & rivers, affecting & destroying land & aquatic life.

So, how can using Eco friendly products like Areca Leaf Plates make a difference?
Areca palm leaf plates are completely compostable, made from natural materials, easy-to-
use, easy-to-carry & encourage others to switch to eco-friendly alternatives. Apart from these
features, the plates are highly durable & can withstand hot & cold temperatures without
deforming.

These are some of the reasons why you should opt for Areca Leaf Plates. 5
Prominent Benefits –

Areca Leaf Plates It is made from Naturally-Sourced Materials

As the name implies, Areca plates are made from 100% natural material – Areca
Palm leaf. This leaf is naturally obtained from the Areca Palm Tree & doesn’t involve any
sort of tree cutting practices. In addition to that, the manufacturing process of such
disposable plates is completely colour, dye & chemical-free We use scary number of plastic
cups, plates, tumblers, etc. (disposables) these days, may it be in small get- together
parties, picnics, or big functions and meetings. These disposables are, undoubtedly, easy
to carry, cheap and very useful. But we hardly give a thought on their effects on the
environment.

Since the concern for environment started growing, we resorted to use paper plates
and cups instead of plastic ones. It is our misconception that paper plates are Eco-
friendly products. In fact, they are more harmful to the environment than plastic ones,
in my view, because we fell the trees to get paper. Yes, paper plates are degradable
unlike plastic ones, but a great deal of pollution is caused while manufacturing paper.

They are Available in a Plethora of Styles

Areca Leaf Plates are provided by a wide range of offline & online stores.
Therefore, you’ll come across plates of different shapes & sizes. Simply choose plates that
meet your event requirements & promote the usage of environmentally friendly products in
weddings, birthdays, special occasions & more!

You Can Easily Handle these Eco Friendly Products

These plates are highly durable, light in weight, easy-to-carry & easy-to-use.
Therefore, you won’t have any problems while switching from plastic-based plates to eco-
friendly alternatives.

These Plates are Microwavable, Recyclable & Compostable

Areca Leaf disposable plates boast excellent thermoregulation properties which
enables them to withstand low & high temperatures with ease. Apart from this, these plates
can be easily used in microwaves, are leak-proof, easily compostable & recyclable.

There are Multiple Uses of Areca Leaf Plates

You can seamlessly use Areca leaf plates for packaging purposes, buffet parties,
restaurants, family gatherings, kitchenware& ovens. Additionally, these plates do not alter
the taste of your food unlike plastic plates & you can also serve cold/hot/oily foods with
ease.

These are a few benefits of Areca Leaf Plates that will nudge you to switch from
toxic plastic plates to eco-friendly alternatives.

Areca leaf plates are perfect alternate to Plastics/Polymer based products and also
Paper based products about which the entire world is concerned about. A 100% natural
mechanism is followed for manufacturing these plates. The fallen areca leaf is collected
from farms. The Sheath of the areca leaf cleaned and soaked in water for approximately 15
minutes and shade dried for 30 minutes. They are then compressed to different shapes
using the correspondingly shaped Machines. They are then packed as per the customer
requirement.

In the above context, areca/palm leaf disposables, in my opinion, are a great

substitute for plastic/paper disposables. To make areca leaf disposables, there is no need
of felling trees. Also, there won’t be water or air pollution while making these plates, nor
is it harmful after usage, as it is biodegradable. Just imagine how much we can
contribute to environmental conservation if we use these plates and cups wherever we
now use plastic/paper ones. Below is a list of some features of these products.

Areca Leaf Plates Certifications -

When you are choosing to purchase Areca plates over the standard disposable
plates, you would want to make sure that the Areca plates you choose are actually as
healthy and eco-friendly as they are advertised or claimed to be.

The plates can be tested and certified by competing authorities and private agencies
before exporting. We have composed a complete and comprehensive guide for buyers
looking for information areca palm leaf plates testing and certifications.

Areca palm leaf plate certification can be classified into: Health tests:
• Anaerobic Plate Count – APC35C.
• Phytosanitary Certification (Plant quarantine test) Biodegradability/compost ability
tests.

Health Testing Methods

As indicated by the name, these are the tests used to check whether an Areca plate
product is safe and healthy to use or not. The following tests are officially classified as
health tests for Areca plate certification:

Anaerobic Plate Count – APC35C

This method simply provides a “count” or number of the microorganisms present
in or on the Areca plates – primarily the anaerobic and mesospheric bacteria. Anaerobic
means that they can survive without oxygen and mesospheric means that they can grow at
temperatures around 35 degrees Celsius. The microbes that have both these characteristics
can be detected by the test – thus giving a clear idea about the pathogens that a product
might contain that can cause serious health issues for the consumers or users.

Method:
The method that is used to obtain the Anaerobic Plate Count involves the keeping
of the sample in a Petri dish that contains a nutrient-rich medium like agar to sustain the
microbes under anaerobic (free of oxygen) conditions and at the temperature of 35 degree
Celsius. It provides certification for the Areca plate or palm dinnerware regarding its health
impacts.

Phyto-Sanitation (Plant Quarantine)

• As you know, palm leaf dinnerware is made from the sheath from the areca nut
tree. It is plant material it is mandatory to get plant quarantine certification before
export for the following reasons:
• To prevent the introduction of a new kind of pests from the source country to the
importing country. Because this pest may cause the problem to the crops.
• To promote safe global trade.

The method of plant and animal “quarantine” was first applied around the mid-
1300s, subsequent to the spread of a malignant malady called Black Death in Europe. A
waiting period of 40 days was imposed on all the animal and plant stock being imported
into Italy from other countries to ensure that the stock is free of any kind of disease.

Method
The Inspector randomly pulls the sample from the consignment for testing and this
will be sent to the lab for testing.

Visual Examination:
Using a illuminated magnifying glass the sample will examined to detect live pests.

X-Ray:
X-ray tests are used to detect hidden infestation. This is especially done for seeds
and legumes.

Microscope:
The sample will examined using a powerful stereomicroscope for the infestation on
the surface. This will done mainly items made out of plant material.

A paper plate business involves manufacturing plates that were made out of paper
for serving food. They were considered an economical alternative to plastic plates. With
the ban of single usage plastic by several states as well as in Indian Railways .

3 . Sugarcane to Sustainable Plates and Bowls

Transitions 2 earth recently released biodegradable and compostable bowls and
plates. The newest product line offers products that are durable, microwave-safe, break
down into nutrient-rich soil, and do not use trees in their production process. These
features are made possible from using Bagasse to make the plates and bowls.

What is Bagasse? How is it used to make plates and bowls?

Bagasse is the fibrous material that remains after the juices are removed from
sugarcane stalk. The fibrous portion generally becomes a waste product after the juices are
separated. This is where Transitions2earth comes in. Transitions2Earth up cycles or makes
use of the Bagasse that normally ends up in a landfill in order to make usable and
sustainable goods.

Harvesting Sugarcane on a Sugarcane farm.

Transitions2earth takes the Bagasse and transforms the material into useful
products. Because of Transitions 2 earth, large quantities of Bagasse are saved from
landfills.

The process of converting Bagasse into plates and bowls.

The finished bowls and plates are then tested for oil and water resistance. Only
after the bowls and plates pass those tests can they be packaged and ready for consumers.
The completed packages are filled with plates and bowls to be used for picnics, cafeterias,
or any time there is a need for disposable tableware. Tableware that provides peace of
mind for the eco-conscious.

The plates and bowls are 100% biodegradable and can completely break down in
90 days in a compost facility. Transitions2earth takes a waste-product that would end up in
a landfill and creates a useful, consumer-ready product with little environmental impact.
We are very proud to be one step closer to eliminating waste from landfills

The Bamboo Process

Bamboo products are made from the part of the plant called the sheath. This is the
protective outer layer of the bamboo’s clump that grows in young plants. Once the plant
hits a certain maturity point, the sheath then falls off. Once the sheath is collected, it is
cleaned and boiled. The sheath is next laminated into the necessary thickness for the
desired product. The sheath is then pressed and bonded into the required shape. The
process involves no use of chemicals or toxins.

What makes this process environmentally sound is that the sheath naturally falls as
part of the bamboo’s growth process. It’s collected right after falling and with no harm
done to the bamboo plants. If the sheath were to be left alone, it would simply be absorbed
back into the ground. This collection is similar to how palm leafs are collected after they
fall from their trees, eliminating any direct impact on their growth or existence.

Wheat Bran plates

Bran consists of the outer layers of cereal grain, such as wheat, rye, or oat. It is a
by- product in the process of milling grain. It is mostly used as animal feed, and only a

Areca Products, Shivamogga

small fraction is used by the food industry. Bran is a problem for the milling industry, as it
takes up a lot of storage space and can only be stored up to 7 days
.
Instead of letting the bran go to waste, Biotrem turns it into plates and bowls
without any additional compounds. The technology is based on chemical composition and
physical properties specific to wheat bran. The bran is pressed into shape and baked in one
production cycle, without the need of any additives, aside from a little water. One tonne of
wheat bran produces up to 10,000 units.

The edible tableware, consisting of plates, bowls, and cutlery, can be used to serve
both hot and cold food. Aside from being edible, the plates and bowls can be used in
classic and microwave ovens. Under correct circumstances, the products can be stored for
at least 3 years. After use, the tableware decomposes in 30 days.

The products are manufactured in accordance with the industrial hygienic standards
based on the EU regulations and according to the BRC food production quality standard.

FINDINGS, SUGGESTIONS AND CONCLUSION

NES Institute of Advanced Studies, Shivamogga 52

A study on Process management of Areca Leaf Products with Special references to Mylar
Areca Products, Shivamogga

FINDINGS
• The diseases affecting most of cultivators plantation is kole raga and others
diseases Most of the an animals affecting areca plantation are other animals like
squirrel and rats Areca plant usually shed 3 to 5 leaves in a year
• Most of the cultivators collect fallen leaves and store but few let them rot The
more number farmers dispose the stored leaves to agents rather than to factory
directly
• Highest number of areca cultivator adopt auction and tender method for the sale of
areca leaf The cultivators expect 0.5 to 1.5 rs and 1.5 to 2.5 rate per single fallen
leaf
• Cultivators don’t get immediate -payment on sale Highest number of respondents
get advance from the agent
• Most of agent don’t charge interest on advance More number of respondents have
given the opinion that areca products can replace plastic and paper products but
few respondents thinks that it cannot replace plastic and paper product
• More of respondents say that areca helps to control soil pollution and increase
fertility but few think its not nature friendly
• Most of the respondents think not to setup areca plant leaf processing unit

Suggestions
• The industry has to provide proper knowledge to farmers to control kole rag
diseases by giving information about fertilizers and chemical spray that helps
them protect areca plant
• To protect areca plantations from rats and squirrels industry should provide proper
intelligence to the farmers about sound making fire crackers that avoid animals
• Most of the cultivators collect fallen leaf but they holding small area plantation
but few large farmers don’t collect fallen leaf as they have high income form nut
itself so they don’t show any interest in collecting fallen areca leaf so industry
should suggest them to collect fallen leaf and store so that it helps increase in raw
material supply for the industry
• Most number of farmers dispose fallen leaf trough agents but industry should take
proper measures and should help in transportation to attract farmers so that they
directly dispose stored fallen leaf to the industry

NES Institute of Advanced Studies, Shivamogga 53

A study on Process management of Areca Leaf Products with Special references to Mylar
Areca Products, Shivamogga

• Cultivators don’t get immediate payment on sale of stored areca leaf when sold to
agent Industry should provide instant payment to the areca plant farmers so that
they directly dispose the leaf to industry it directly helps in avoiding higher
payment to the commission to agents
• Most agents provide advances to farmers industry should adopt same and provide
more befits so it attracts farmers and helps industry in cost reduction of raw
material which helps In lowering of process costing
• in the survey we got know that most farmers think that areca leaf products can
replace plastic products but few think cannot replace plastic products they should
be provided with proper knowledge about areca leaf products nature friendliness
so they show interest in collecting and storing and disposing fallen leaf
• most of respondents think areca leaf processed products are eco friendly but few
have misconception about areca leaf products .
• industry should provide them some knowledge about the products nature
friendliness so they start showing interest in collecting and disposing fallen leaf
whit directly helps industry in increase in inflow of raw material
• farmers expect 0.5 to 2.5 from agents but if industry provide bit price it avoids
agent and brokers so that is creates a network between farmers and industry so that
it avoids damage of raw material while transporting
• most of respondents not willing to setup areca plant leaf based processing unit
they should be provided knowledge about these products and processing of areca
leaf so that it increases overall production and help in increase in country GDP
growth.

Conclusion
Large amount of areca leaf is given by small land holders. But to improve productivity,
they have problems like financial assistance, high wages and high rate of fertilizers etc.
To overcome these problems, small land holders should be provided with the long term
loans and Government and also industry should provide supporting prices for the
fertilizers and their products. National and Rural development banks must activate in this
direction. Steps must be taken to attract more consumers for the areca leaf products.

NES Institute of Advanced Studies, Shivamogga 54

It is observed that the current "good value" of the areca leaf products is due to
"international demand and local demand The care must be taken so that areca leaf
products should be Independent of such commercial items.

It is necessary for the management to suit its processing infrastructure to the needs of
growers with in its process , managerial and financial setup. All areca nut growers should
be properly assisted and given proper idea how to store fallen areca leaf in condition and
inform them about benefit Industry should inform all areca farmers about areca leaf and it
can be income source to them

Areca leaf plates hold various market opportunities both domestically and internationally. Domestically, they have significant potential in areas like restaurants, outdoor catering, and events, tapping into the growing demand for eco-friendly alternatives . Internationally, the first quality plates are targeted for export, driven by increased global awareness and demand for biodegradable products as alternatives to plastics . Domestically, they see demand in states like Karnataka, Maharashtra, Delhi, and Tamil Nadu . Challenges include overcoming the instability of local markets where demand can fluctuate based on seasonal functions .

The pricing of Areca leaf plates is influenced by several key factors, including the cost of raw materials, which varies seasonally depending on the supply of fallen leaves and demand from functions like weddings . Production costs, involving labor and manufacturing processes, also impact pricing. Moreover, the quality of plates aimed at different markets—high-quality plates for international markets versus locally sold second-quality plates—affects their pricing . Additionally, competitive pricing strategies in relation to paper and plastic alternatives and the perceived value of eco-friendliness contribute to their market price .

The large-scale production of Areca leaf plates faces challenges primarily due to the limited geographical availability of the Areca palm, which is not grown everywhere. This limitation constrains the supply of raw materials necessary for widespread production . Additionally, the market reliance on seasonal functions like weddings also impacts production stability, creating fluctuating demand that affects raw material cost and availability .

The production of Areca leaf plates significantly contributes to rural employment in India. Each manufacturing unit provides direct employment to three people and indirectly impacts employment for two more, particularly in rural areas where labor costs are lower . With 4 lakh hectares of Areca crops cultivated, around 5400 million leaves are available for conversion into value-added products. This potential for production could establish up to 27,700 manufacturing units across India, creating approximately 1.5 lakh full-time jobs . The establishment of such units, however, is currently concentrated mostly in South India .

Areca leaf plates offer several environmental benefits over traditional paper and plastic plates. They are made from fallen Areca palm leaves, which means no trees are felled for their production, unlike paper plates . Areca plates are fully biodegradable and compostable, in contrast to plastic plates that contribute to long-lasting environmental waste . Their manufacturing process does not involve harmful chemicals or coatings, minimizing pollution . Additionally, using these plates supports a waste-to-wealth concept by converting agro waste into value-added products while reducing air and water pollution .

Areca leaf plate manufacturing has the potential to positively affect local economies by providing additional income sources to supari agriculturists through the collection of fallen leaves, which were previously waste . This practice can transform traditional agro-waste into profitable products, thereby promoting a sustainable agricultural ecosystem. Furthermore, the participation of local labor in collecting, transporting, and processing these leaves fosters rural employment and economic development . However, it may also require shifts in traditional agricultural practices to accommodate the collection and processing of Areca leaves specifically for manufacturing purposes.

Areca leaf plates offer significant disposal benefits as they naturally degrade within 60 days, similar to plant matter . This rapid biodegradability reduces landfill contributions compared to plastic plates that persist in the environment for much longer periods . Additionally, the manufacturing waste from Areca sheaths can be used for vermicomposting, producing dry fodder for animals, and making biofuel bricks, further reducing environmental impact by turning waste products into useful resources .

To ensure quality and safety, Areca leaf plates are subject to health and biodegradability tests. Health tests include Anaerobic Plate Count (APC35C) and Phytosanitary Certification, which check for plant quarantine measures . These certifications ensure the plates are safe for use without harmful chemical residues. This quality assurance is crucial for international market acceptance and confirms the eco-friendly claims associated with Areca leaf plates .

Areca leaf plates support India's 'waste-to-wealth' initiatives by transforming agricultural waste into valuable products. The manufacturing process capitalizes on the naturally fallen Areca palm leaves, converting what is typically discarded as waste into profitable items . This not only provides additional revenue streams for farmers but also advances sustainable practices by reducing environmental damage associated with waste . Furthermore, by enabling rural employment and enhancing local economies, this initiative aligns with broader economic development and environmental sustainability goals, embodying principles advocated by the 'waste-to-wealth' concept .

Functionally, Areca leaf plates are superior in several ways. They are microwave and refrigerator safe, can withstand hot, cold, wet, and oily foods without altering taste or leaking, and are thus versatile in various culinary uses . These plates also hold liquid items for up to four hours without leakage, which gives them an advantage over conventional paper plates that tend to disintegrate in similar conditions . They are light in weight, sturdy, and non-crushable, which makes them convenient for transportation and use .
