Red October: Birth of Communism

The document is a process paper written by a student named Logan Courtright for their National History Day project about the Beginnings of Communism: Red October Revolution and Reaction. Logan chose this topic because they already had some prior knowledge and interest in Russia and the October Revolution. Logan conducted research online, using Wikipedia to learn background information and finding primary sources like political cartoons and treaties. Logan chose to create a website for their project because some of their sources were images and they had experience making a website before. The project relates to the theme of reaction, revolution, and reform in history by focusing on the Russian Revolution that birthed communism and changed Russia's government system.

The Beginnings of Communism: Red October: Revolution and Reaction

Logan Courtright Senior Division Website

Process Paper I chose my topic for NHD by drawing from my prior knowledge, as well as my likes and dislikes. I already knew various sundry pieces of information about Russia, and Red October in particular interested me, even though I had never bothered to look it up, or read a book on it. Also, I enjoy learning about Russia, as well as Communism, which is a particular interest of mine. The Great October Socialist Revolution was where Communism was really put into practice, and since it is certainly a revolution, I thought I might as well go ahead and do it. I mainly conducted my research by looking online. I did not go to a library, as I thought that any book that I would find wouldnt give me any new information that I couldnt find online. I first looked at Wikipedia, and although I didnt use any of the information that I learned there in my paper (without citing another website that had the same information); I learned plenty of information on the background of the whole thing. Then, I started to look for primary sources that would be useful to my paper, such as the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk, and numerous political cartoons from magazines in America. I selected my presentation category from the materials that I had available and from prior experiences. I chose to do a website for two reasons: one, some of my sources are images, political cartoons that give a much better impression and do a much better job backing up my claims if they are visible. Two, I did a website in 7th grade, and so I feel more comfortable doing that instead of, say, a board, which I have never done before. It would have the same affect, with the visuals and everything, but the decision I made was one based on past experiences. My project relates to the NHD theme of Reaction, Revolution and Reform in History by being the beginning of one of the biggest revolutions to happen in the 20th century. The Russian Revolution was the war that birthed Communism, made a new world superpower, and made a huge impact on the world in general. Red October was the start of this; it was what laid the stage for the rest of Russian/Soviet Union political and economic policies for the rest of the century. It also connects to the Reaction and Reform in history, too. My project focuses on the reaction to Red October in America, and with the Reform, the Bolsheviks re-did the entire Russian government into Communism.
