REFLECTION 1

Before starting this S.B.A, I viewed divorce as just a minor

event in the life of a child. (Previous knowledge) “Come

Back To Me, Mom” speaks of how sad the persona is

because their mother is no longer in their life. This artefact

makes clear just how much a child suffers and misses their

parent when they have left after a divorce.

“Why Mom?” (Title mentioned but not genre) shows how

emotional the persona is about their mother leaving. He/she

is trying to rationalize why they are tormented by this

situation. This artefact shows how puzzled a child can be

when their family is broken apart. “Daddy Walked Out”

speaks of what happened the day that the persona’s father

left and the effects of that change in his/her life from that day
onward. This poem shows that the divorce of parents can

enable children to live in a positive environment with fewer

arguments and stress. (Issue in the artefact)

 REFLECTION 1

The name of this article is “The eruption of the Montserrat

volcano”. I knew that volcanic eruptions are very dangerous.

(Previous knowledge) The main idea of this article was to

tell us when the volcano erupted and the events that led us to

its eruption. For example, there would be lots of earthquakes

and gas would come out of the volcano. (Detail supporting

the issue in the artefact) I learnt when there are {5} five

earthquakes a week this type of earthquake activity is known

as a swarm. The main idea of the story “Volcano” is a person

telling us how their experience was during this volcanic

eruption; it was scary, freighting and terrifying. (Title and

genre mentioned) I learnt that magma melts everything

regardless size or weight and I knew that magma sizzles and

bubbles. In the poem, I knew that earth “makes”

disasters .The main idea of the poem “Volcanic Eruption” is

the poet telling the reader what happens when a volcano

erupts, for example they lose property, flights are blocked

and innocent people die. (Issue in artefact) Instead of people

blame the earth, they blame and question god. I knew that

volcanic eruptions are dangerous and it causes a lot of

destruction.
 REFLECTION 2

Artefact one (Mention the genre) “Come Back to Me Mom”

was persuasive. Metaphors (Language strategy identified)

were the main writing technique used. For example,

“drowning in my sorrow” (line 1), showing how much the

persona cries likening it to a body of water, large enough to

makes the persona feels as if they are drowning. This shows

how much a child suffers when a parent leaves.

Artefact two “Why Mom” was reflective. Repetition was the

main writing technique used. Repetition of the word

‘why’, “Gone, why she would leave, why's she not here”

(line 5) (Example of language strategy given) shows how

perplexed the persona is. They constantly query the present

circumstances, showing how puzzled a child is when their

family is broken apart. (Commentary on the effect of the

language strategy)

Artefact three “Daddy Walked Out” was reflective.

Repetition of the phrase ‘The day Daddy walked out’,

(Lines 1 and 9) draws reference to the day that her father

moved out. This poem shows that divorce sometimes creates

a positive environment for children.

 REFLECTION 2

The poem “Vocanic Eruption” (genre and title) causes the

reader to reflect on the poem by using rhetorical statements,

for example: “Don’t you have mercy?” the poet is

questioning the earth. (language technique and example, but

no discussion of the technique) The poet states the damages

the volcano does example “Killing people without any

reason, losing property, and flights are blocked and people

dying for being late.” This helps the writer to achieve his

purpose because it tells us what the volcanic eruption does.

The article “Volcano” gives us information that we did not

know about the volcano, and the events leading to its

eruption. The article uses statistics “the first paragraph said

that volcano tectonic earthquake in February had “sparking

fears of eruption” five times a week telling us a fact or a

piece of data obtained from their study. The statistics used

gave the reader and idea of how much time the volcano

“sparked” which was 5 times a week. (example) The story

“Volcano” causes the reader to imagine or to be informed

about the tragedy that is taking place in this story by using

descriptive language like personification. The persona uses

personification “Magma melts everything in its part, as the

river of molten rock slowly slithers down the volcano.” This

personification helps to achieve the writer’s purpose because

it gives you an idea of how the surroundings looks like the

speed of magma and its destructive force. (language

REFLECTION 3

I learned that children miss the parent who has left home and

the way things used to be before the divorce. But, that

sometimes children benefit from divorce because they are

now able to live in a peaceful home and have parents who

are focused on them. (Knowledge from the topic)

My experience working alongside my group members was

satisfactory. Some members were regularly absent from

school, which made it difficult to have any discussion as a

group. Our English teacher was informed of the situation and

a mandatory date was set for everyone to be present.

Working in a group taught me to be patient and cooperate

with others. (Personal growth and dealing with challenges)

As a group, we helped each other by giving deadline

reminders and looking over each other’s work.

My research skills were improved when I had to search for

artefacts, and word limits helped my summary skills. My

self-discipline has also increased due to the need to complete

satisfactory work within specified deadlines.

 REFLECTION 3

Two new things I learnt about the topic “Volcanoes “are

they can be very destructive for example: it changes the

environment by destroying the trees, killing people by smoke

inhalation and exposure to hot magma which can cause the

death of people and losing property. (Knowledge from the

topic) Metamorphic and igneous rocks are formed from the

cooling of magma. My experience working in a group was

great, two heads are better than one. Everyone contributed

by sharing their information, checking over each other’s

reflections, planned and managed their time wisely by

sacrificing their lunch time, keeping their deadlines,

developed new approaches to resolving differences and

completing the work. No problem occurred while working

as a team .The benefits to me in working in a group are: it

increased productivity- gets work done faster, performance. I

learnt how destructive a volcano can be, the causes that lead

to its eruption from the groups research and communications

skills meaning working together in a team we can archive

more. (Personal growth and dealing with challenges) My

English skills also improved, I was able to summaries my

writing. I learnt new vocabulary while reading and my

research for this SBA was done on the internet. (Academic

growth) My SBA helped with self-discipline, it teaches me

to have patience, how to communicate with others, how to

stick to my decisions and follow them without changing my

mind and how to control myself, my actions and my

behavior .
