PART 1: PROBLEM SOLVING

1. You see an ad in the paper for a good job. They ask for
references. You do not have any references confirmed or
established. How will you solve the problem?

What is the actual problem?

My problem here is lack of confirmed or established references. It is
really difficult to apply for a job, especially when it requires references. The
symptoms of my problem is seeing a good job ad that needs references, I don’t
have any established or ready references, and worry this could affect the job
application process.
Gather information and brainstorm possible ideas for solutions.
To gather more information, I have to understand the job closely and to
know the reference specific requirements. I’ll also think about people who know
me well and can vouch for my skills, even if they aren’t my direct supervisor such
as any of my professors, mentors, friends, and colleagues. . I will also consider
gaining more experience by internships, volunteer opportunities, or freelance
work.
Select the best idea.
The best idea or solution for me is to consider the alternative references
because it can come from all my different backgrounds such as in academic,
volunteer work, or personal connection and this can still provide a valuable
perspective about my capabilities to work. For example, in academia, I could
approach my professors who know my academic capabilities well, or colleagues
from a project where I have shown my leadership and how I work in a team.
What would be the next steps in the problem-solving process?
I'll enumerate every possible substitute reference. Following that, I will
make an effort to get in touch with them directly by phone or email, explain my
circumstances, bring up our time spent working together, and ask if they would
be willing to serve as references for the position for which I am applying.
Afterward, I will prepare a new list of all the individuals who are willing to serve as
my references and include it in my updated resume and cover letter. I will submit
my resume and then inquire with my references to see if they have heard from
the job I'm applying for. I'll also get ready for the job interview.
2. You have a new job. You want to look your best but have not
had much experience shopping for clothes. You do not have
much money but want to get clothes that are in style. How will
you solve the problem?

What is the problem?

My problem here is I don’t have any experience in clothes shopping and
my budget is limited. The symptoms of my problem are not sure what clothing is
appropriate for my work, not having enough clothing funds, and lack of
confidence in choosing a style to look professional.
Gather information and brainstorm possible ideas for solution
I will research the dress code and culture of my new workplace, look into
trendy fashion styles that are suitable to look professional, explore different
stores and online that offer affordable clothes that are within my budget range,
and ask my family, friends, or co-workers who have an experience in dressing
professionally.
Select the best idea
Exploring various stores and online is my best suggestion for solving this
issue. Secondhand or thrift stores seem like the most reasonable and cost
effective option, so that's where I will shop. In comparison to new clothing,
secondhand stores have much lower prices, a larger availability of sizes and
styles, and more options for finding clothes that fit well and are still in style. They
can also help me make more financial savings.
What would be the next steps in the problem-solving process?
The next thing I'll do is look up online what trendy professional attire
looks like, and I'll schedule some time to visit several local thrift stores. I'll try on
clothes to make sure it fits properly and is comfortable, and I'll pay close attention
to the condition and suitability for the workplace.
