● "Reflection is a thinking process that occurs before, during and/or after situations with
the purpose of developing greater understanding of oneself and events so that future
encounters can be improved.” (University of Alberta course INT410 worksheet)

be developing for lifelong learning.

● If a question asks you what YOU think, then your response should be worded in the first
person. This means your response will include words like 'I will...' or 'I think...' If your
responses are in the third person ('physiotherapists should...') I will be asking you to
re-do your assignment.
● Many of the self-reflections ask you to compare the Canadian physiotherapy practice
with where you are now. For those of you who are currently in Canada, compare with
the country that you did your training in or where you worked outside of Canada.

How do the principles of patient-centred care compare to your current practice and what
will you need to do differently if successful in coming to Canada?
Years ago, the practice was conducted di erently in India. Because people
were not familiar with physiotherapy, they relied on their doctors and
physiotherapist to make clinical decisions. Patient involvement was minimal,
consent was frequently verbal, and patients received little information about
their condition. But there is little doubt that in recent years, the standard of
medical care has improved. Clients are given the chance to participate in and
make decisions about their treatment, and doctors and physical therapists are
required to accept those decisions. This results in clients being treated with
more consideration and respect.
Each therapist in Canada is required to abide by the rules since they are quite
explicit. I would abide by the law and always put the client's preference
rst. It's crucial to treat patients with respect and care. Not want to let any of
my patients down. I would describe their illness to them and provide further
information on the potential therapy alternatives. The client and their family
members should be actively involved, and I would allow them to choose the
course of action they feel most comfortable with.

What (if anything) is different about the informed consent process in Canada compared to
obtaining informed consent in your own country? What will you need to do differently to
obtain informed consent if practicing in Canada?
In India, the physician is seen as more powerful and has the upper hand when
it comes to patient cases and treatment plans, hence the physician or surgeon
performs the informed consent (express consent-written) rst. Only patients
getting surgery need to provide written consent. Because the therapist is aware
that the patient has already seen the doctor or orthopaedic, informed consent
(often verbal) or embodied consent may be used in physiotherapy, depending
on the clinic. The purpose of providing information on the diagnosis and course
of therapy is to let the patient make an informed decision about whether to
pursue treatment or not. They also have the option to stop a current course of
treatment.
In Canada, I would obtain implied consent for the subsequent sessions after
obtaining stated consent for the initial session. If the client leaves and then
decides to return after a few months, I would need to obtain their speci c
permission once more.

Describe two things you can do to improve your cultural competence (based on the
Camphina- Boncote model)?
Camphina- Boncote model)?
1/ Cultural Desire-
• To become culturally competent, I would listen well to the clients who belong
to a di erent culture
• I would like to Participate/ volunteer in community health events where I can
learn about their culture. So It Will give me a chance to increase my cultural
competence by educating myself on the histories, traditions, and principles
that underlie the other cultures in the world. In India, I took part in many
studies and projects From which I explored the beliefs of di erent religions
towards the physiotherapy treatment.
2/ Cultural Awareness-
• Understand the beliefs of other cultures (e.g. In India, people still believe that
using herbs or home remedies can cure the disease)
• Learn about the communities and know what is di erent in their culture.
Respect their ideas.
