Abstract

The purpose of this study is to know if time management can really

affect the academic performance of the Grade 11 St. Patrick students of

Baco Catholic School, Inc. The study used a qualitative research design.

The population of the study consisted of twenty-four Grade 11 St. Patrick

students of Baco Catholic School, Inc. The researchers use questionnaires

and the interview method in order to determine the effect of time-

management strategies on the academic performance of St. Patrick 11

students. All the gathered data was evaluated based on it’s components

and criteria for accuracy, reliability, efficiency, and user

friendliness. It was concluded that students who have good time

management skills tend to have higher academic performance, and students

who have poor time management skills could result in decreased outcomes.

The study recommended that the Grade 11 St. Patrick students concentrate

on developing their capacities in time management areas through

practicing different strategies to maximize the things that they can do

in a short span of time, and find the best strategy that suits them.

Students should also set specific and achievable goals for their academic

work; this can help them prioritize using their time wisely and stay

focused on what is most important.

Chapter I

Research Introduction

Throughout the history, there has been great emphasis on the

effective and efficient management of time, which has also been

considered the key to success (Pugh & Nathwani, 2017; Nasrullah & Khan,

2015). According to Savino (2016) time management is an ability to handle

your time wisely to be more efficient in what activities you are doing.

It emphasized the importance of time.

Time management is the process of organizing and planning how to

allocate time effectively and efficiently to achieve specific goals,

tasks, or projects. It involves prioritizing tasks, breaking them down

into smaller, manageable parts, and setting specific deadlines for their

completion. It is the strategy most of the students used to accomplish

the given tasks in a short period of time; time management is an

essential skill to develop as it can significantly impact their academic

performance and overall well-being. Students who manage their time

effectively are more likely to complete their activities, leading to

better academic performance. When students manage their time effectively,

6
they can avoid last-minute cramming, which can lead to stress and

anxiety. Students can accomplish more in less time, allowing them to have

more time for other activities and interests.

In summary, time management is a crucial skill for students to

develop, as it can have a significant impact on their academic success,

stress levels, productivity, and overall well-being.

There are several time management strategies that students can use

to make the most of their time. The first one is the prioritization

strategy, which involves identifying and focusing on tasks that are most

important and urgent. The next one is time blocking, which is the

strategy of breaking your day into blocks of time, each dedicated to a

specific task or activity. By scheduling your tasks, you can ensure that

you have enough time for each task and avoid procrastination. And the

third one is the pomodoro technique; this strategy involves breaking your

work into 25-minute intervals, separated by short breaks. This can help

you stay focused and avoid burnout.

But unfortunately, many students still struggle to use time

management effectively. The reason behind this might be a lack of

awareness; many students may not be aware of the importance of time

management or how to implement it effectively. Procrastination is also a

common problem among students, and it can make it difficult for them to

manage their time effectively. Students may put off important tasks until

the last minute, which can lead to stress and poor performance. The other

factor affecting students’ use of time management is that they may have

7
too many commitments, such as classes, extracurricular activities, part-

time jobs, and household or social obligations. It can be challenging to

balance all of these commitments and manage time effectively. Some

students may struggle with motivation, which can make it difficult to

focus and manage time effectively. They may find it hard to prioritize

tasks and may procrastinate or avoid work altogether. The last one is

that they might be distracted. With the proliferation of digital devices

and social media, it can be challenging for students to stay focused and

avoid distractions. Social media, video games, and other forms of

entertainment can be tempting distractions that consume valuable time.

Time management is a critical skill for students to develop, but it can

be challenging to implement without the right tools and support.

This gives motivation to the researchers to conduct this study to

know if having a time management strategy really has an impact on

academic performance, especially in the written works of HUMSS students.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to know if having time management strategies can

truly lead to good results on the academic performances or written works

of the Grade 11 St. Patrick of Baco Catholic School, Inc.

To take note this research study is guided by the following

questions that all be justified in further discussions:

8
1. How are the activities and academic performance of HUMSS grade 11

students who use time management strategies?

2. Does having a poor time management strategy really affect students’

performance in school?

3. Does having good time management help the Grade 11 HUMSS students

with their activities?

4. What are the effects of time management strategies on the academic

performance a student?

Scope and Delimitation

This study will only focus on determining the effects of time

management strategies on academic performance, specifically in the

written works of the Grade 11 St. Patrick. The impact of time management

strategies on non-academic parts of students’ lives will be excluded from

this study.

The researchers limited the study to twenty-four (24) students out of

33 enrolled Grade 11 St. Patrick students in the second semester of the

School Year 2022-2023 at Baco Catholic School, Inc.

Conceptual Framework

Time Management Academic Performance of Grade 11

Strategy St. Patrick Students

Figure 1. Conceptual Framework

9
Figure 1 presents the conceptual framework of the study. This study

revolves around two variables. Time Management Strategy as an independent

variable and Academic performance as the dependent variable.

In Figure 1. Time management strategy is a form of self-management with a

clear emphasis on time in understanding what activities to do; how to do

them more efficiently; in what time it should be done and when is the

correct time to the particular activity (Savino, 2016). It is the

technique some of the students use to make the most of their time and

accomplish things in a given period of time without cramming or being

stewards.

Another variable is academic performance, which is the performance shown

by the student in school, in their activities, and especially in their

written works.

This study will examine the effect of having a time management

strategy on students’ academic performance, specifically in their written

works.

Significance of the Study

The researchers believe that this study will not only provide them with

useful information but will also benefit the following groups:

The Students. This study may provide students with information on how to

efficiently use the time management strategy to maximize their academic

performance, specifically in their written works.

10
The Parents. This study will give the parents knowledge on how the

academic performance of the their children are being affected with the

time management strategies that they are using.

The Teachers. At the end of this study, the teachers may help and

support the students to have a strategy for managing their time and to do

it effectively.

The Future Researchers. This study can be their reference when they do

their research. They can also learn about the different strategies that

students use to maximize their school performance.

Definition of Terms

1. Time management – it is the process of organizing and planning how to

divide your time between different activities. In this study, it’s the

coordination of tasks and activities to maximize the effectiveness of an

individual’s efforts.

2. Academic Performance – involves factors such as intellectual level,

personality, motivation, skill interest, and study habits. This study

measures student achievement across various academic subjects.

3. Ability – you could also think of it as the art of having time to do

everything you need to do. In this study, he shows that he has the

ability to bring out the best in others.

4. Knowledge – does much more than just help students hone their thinking

skills; it actually makes learning easier. In this study, it is

11
understanding gained through learning or experience that gives you the

knowledge.

5. Exposure – is the amount of a program’s intended content that was

received by participants. In this study, the facts of experiencing

something or being affected by it because of being in a particular

situation or place are examined.

6. Prioritizing Strategies – methods you can use to complete your daily

work tasks, such as making lists, determining which items to complete

that day, and executing each task in order of urgency In this study, as a

principle, it means doing first things; as a process,it means them in

their order of importance or urgency.

7. Opportunity - the foregone benefits of doing that activity instead of

others, or whatever is given to do a certain desirable activity. In this

study, the opportunity noun: a chance to do something or a situation in

which it is easy for you to do something.

8. Ethnography – is a form of qualitative data collection that records

behavior. In natural settings to understand how time management

influences effects based on your experience. In this study, a research

method central to knowing the world from the standpoint of its social

relations

9. Intellectual Property – maybe the most important intellectual property

produced by the research In this study, they usually give the creator an

exclusive right over the use of his or her creation for a certain period

of time.
12
10. Knowledge Management – effectively use information in today’s

business environment, which they most commonly refer to as a form of

digital technology. In this study, it is the process of identifying,

organizing, storing, and disseminating information within an

organization.

11. Social context – if its relevance can be reliably identified, then

context defended is not the same as subjectivity. In this study, social

context can influence how someone perceives something.

12. Investigation – a planned gathering of facts concerning specific

events, occurrences, or conditions for a particular purpose. In this

study, it is a thorough search for facts, especially those that are

hidden or need to be sorted out.

13. Ample Time – Saying that you have “ample time” to do something means

that you have the time needed to finish that task. In this study,

sometimes it means that you have enough time to finish it.

14. Proliferation – to grow by rapid production of new parts, cells,

buds, or offspring. In this study, it is to increase in number as if by

proliferating.

15. Non-property knowledge – is related to education and training and

encompasses network capital. In this study, it is a physical or chemical

property that is not unique to one particular substance.

13
16. Academic Tracks – areas of research are chosen to help guide them in

selecting a course of study and a research area. In this study, a set of

possible course selections is available to a specific group of students.

17. Advocacy – the study, itactive support of a client or patient so that

they can make choice. In this study it’s defined as any action that

speaks in favor of, recommends, argues for, supports, defends, or pleads

on behalf of others.

18. Informed consent – exists to protect people from harm and to protect

their autonomy. In this study, this is to help them decide if they want

to be treated, tested, or take part in the trial, in which patients are

given important information.

19. Confidentiality – means respecting the confidential nature of the

information gathered during the research. In this study, the terms

“preserving authorized restrictions in access and disclusion” include

means for protecting personal privacy and proprietary information.

20. Holistic – it’s exploration of a research project multi-

dimensionally, exhaustively, and entirely. In this study, approach means

to provide support that looks at the whole person, not just their health

needs.

21. Beneficence – is a fundamental ethical concept where the intended

care is aimed at what is good for the well-being of the patient. In this

study, a concept in research ethics states that researchers should

consider the welfare of research participants.

14
22. Interpretation – the action of explaining the meaning of something.

In this study, the act of explaining, reframing, or otherwise showing

your own understanding of something

23. Non-Numerical – any form of data that is measured in number (or word)

form. In this study, non-numeric data, also called categorical,

qualitative, or yes/no data, is data that can be observed but not

measured

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Throughout the history, there has been great emphasis on the

effective and efficient management of time, which has also been

15
considered the key to success (Pugh & Nathwani, 2017; Nasrullah & Khan,

2015).

According to San Luis 2020, Time is one precious resource that all

of us would wish to have more, in today’s fast-paced, multitasking,

information overloaded world. Personal time management involves

everything you do. No matter how big and no matter how small, everything

counts. Every knowledge you acquire, each new advice you consider, and

each new skill you develop should be taken into consideration.

Time management is about getting results, not about being busy.

Having a balanced lifestyle should be the key result in having personal

time management. This is the main aspect that many practitioners of

personal time management fail to grasp. (Bartolome, 2016)

Frederick Winslow Taylor gave the concept to use time management for

analyzing time and motion studies of employees with aim to decrease time

wasting and unproductive work. Time management has also been defined as a

form of self-management with a clear emphasis on time in understanding

what activities to do; how to do them more efficiently; in what time it

should be done and when is the correct time to the particular activity

(Savino, 2016).

Time waits for no one. The smart thing for one to do is to be ready

with things to do for any time available. It means making one’s time

productive. Ironically, given the scarcity and potential value of time,

smart management of time is not one of the skills people are usually

16
taught while growing up. No wonder there’s a lot of precious time wasted.

No wonder many people wrestle with time pressure for their entire lives –

there seems, to them, too much to do in too little time. Truth is, there

is enough time for everything. The problem is, people don’t usually

identify the right thing to do at the right time. They inundate

themselves with all kinds of tasks to do all at the same time.

Fortunately, good time management can be learned. Anyone can learn how to

control his or her time – and how to spend it wisely. There are ways to

ensure that the time spent studying gives the maximum amount of learning

possible. (Rios, 2016)

Time management is a tool for increasing the goal of productivity

especially for students who work and study at the same time. (Uchenna

John Obijiaku, 2015)

Reyes (2016) has define time management as the art of arranging,

organizing, scheduling and budgeting one’s time for the purpose of

generating more effectiveness in both work and productivity. It is also

perceived as set of principles, practices, skills, tools and systems that

should work together to achieve and improve the quality of life.

Time management is the process of planning and exercising conscious

control of time spent on activities to increase effectiveness,

efficiency, and productivity. Time management is a skill that every

student should possess to achieve their goals. Buenavides, Banacia,

Bulanadi, Llobrera, Saclolo, & Ugto (2020).

17
According to Brigitte, et. Al. (2011), time management plays a

significant role in improving students’ performance and achievements.

They added that, every student should possess time management to

effectively organize activities, set goals, and prioritize those

activities that requires immediate attention and others. It is also

through time management that the students’ ability to make decisions can

be enhanced thereby using time more effectively. While there is no

universally accepted way to manage time, it is still important for

individuals like students to value time management and apply it

indifferent contexts. In addition, being good at planning and

prioritizing such as scheduling time and working to deadlines is also

positively correlated with perceived effectiveness and work related

morale

It has also been association with low anxiety and greater academic

achievement in students (Jenaabadi, Nastiezaie, & Jalalzaei, 2016).

There have been many studies that found association between greater

academic achievement and effective time management as students acquire

strategies that helps them in meeting competing demands (Nadinloyi et

al., 2013; Kharadze, Gulua, & Davit, 2017).

The curriculums in higher education institutes are designed in a way

that gets to peak and troughs in the workload of student requiring them

to manage between their work-life balance, often without the support of

institution. The non-cognitive personal behavior i.e., perspective of

students regarding time management is also an effective predictor of

18
educational achievement as with poor time management skills it gets

difficult for students to plan their studies and which causes them

anxiety and agitation at the assessment time which usually takes place at

the end of the course (Scherer, Talley, & Fife, 2017). This theory shows

that human beings should construct balance among activities and things

while integrating time management techniques effectively. The success of

students is determined through effective utilization of time at each

phase in distance learning institutions and regular system.

Time management is a set of practices that work together to help you

get more value out of your time with the aim of improving the quality of

your life. On the other hand, Academic performance is the outcome of

education, that is the extent to which a student, teacher, or institution

has achieved their educational goals (Adebayo, 2015). He also added that

prioritization of tasks may make studying and schoolwork less

overwhelming and more enjoyable. Through prioritization, workloads can be

done enjoyably without cramming what things are needed to do or school

demands that are needed to accomplish

Conclusion

This review of the literature examines the concept of time

management, it’s significance, and it’s link to academic success. Time

management is defined as the process of planning and exercising conscious

control of time spent on activities to increase effectiveness,

19
efficiency, and productivity. The review suggests that good time

management skills can be learned and that it is important for

individuals, particularly students, to value time management and apply it

in different contexts. Effective time management is associated with

greater academic achievement, low anxiety, and improved work-related

morale. The review also highlights that the that time management is a

collection of skills that you may use to make the most of your time and

enhance your quality of life.

Chapter III

Methodology

This chapter presents the research design and methodology used in

conducting the study, the data gathering procedure, and the instruments

used in the study. It also shows the methods that the researcher employed

in analyzing and interpreting the study’s data.

Research Design

Since the study involves variables that had an effect on the

students’ academic performance, the expressive investigation plan was

used. To gather knowledge and data, researchers will use qualitative

research.

This study is a Qualitative Research, non-numerical data will be

used to explicate findings, conclusions and recommendations. Qualitative

research aims in-depth understanding of an issue, including an

exploration of the reasons and content for participant believe and

actions, so was often designed to be probing in nature” (Richard [Link]

2010). On the other hand Cobb and Forbes (2002) states that qualitative

research as an approach to the study of human behavior that relies on the

analysis of narrative data to create an interpretation of the meaning of

21
this behaviors from the perspective of the participants themselves ,

within their own social context.

Research Instrumentation

In order to determine the effect of time-management strategies on

the academic performance of grade 11 St. Patrick students, the

researchers prepare a set of questionnaires to be distributed to the

respondents. The questionnaire will consist of questions that are related

to the study. The other research instrument will be an self completion

survey for one of the mentioned population’s subject teachers, it is

given via mail, email, in the internet or SMS.

The response will be evaluated based on its components and criteria

for accuracy, reliability, efficiency, and user friendliness.

Research Population

In this study, the target population is the Grade 11 St. Patrick

students of Baco Catholic School Inc. during the school year 2022-2023.

All Grade 11 HUMSS students were invited to take part in the study. They

were provided with a brief overview of the research as well as

information about confidentiality and research ethics.

The table shown below presents the total number of Grade 11 St.

Patrick students at Baco Catholic School for the school year 2022-2023.

Table 1. Respondents of the Study

22
Respondents Population Sample

Grade 11 St. Patrick 33 24

Total 33 24

Additionally, the researchers concluded that the Grade 11 St.

Patrick students of Baco Catholic School Inc., School Year 2022-2023, are

the best and most appreciated population in this study because they have

more school work, and at the same time, we can see that they can still do

activities they want. They tend to be familiar with the various

strategies for managing time since they completed the Grade 10 level in a

modular learning program the previous year and were able to survive

despite the difficulty of balancing schoolwork and household

responsibilities at the same time. Moreover, they are the one who’s

transitioning from bein6a junior high school student to senior high

school student this school year.

Data Gathering Procedure

After the researchers completed the questionnaire and got the

approval of the research adviser, the data gathering proceeded. The

questionnaires will be distributed and administered to the respondents,

the 24 students of Grade 11 St. Patrick of Baco Catholic School Inc.,

School Year 2022-2023, with the permission and supervision of their class

adviser. The retrieval of the instruments will take place in 15–20

23
minutes, allowing ample time and comfort for the respondents to answer

every question.

Meanwhile, the completed survey questionnaire will be retrieved to

ensure the accuracy of the responses and a high percentage of retrieval.

The researchers will analyze and interpret the results using the

statistical treatment

Chapter IV

Results and Discussion

The main focus of this chapter is to interpret and discuss the

collected data from the respondent’s answers to the questionnaire. The

results of the data gathering that has been conducted with the

respondents will greatly contribute and give enough information to the

researchers for them to know the effects of time management strategies on

the academic performance of the students. Subsequently, these findings

will also lead to a better understanding of the effectiveness of time

management strategies on a student’s school performance. Moreover, this

chapter will tackle the experiences of the 24 respondents, who are Grade

11 HUMSS students. The summary of the respondents answers to the given

questionnaires is written below:

A. Survey

24
[Link] do you think are the effect of time management strategies to your

performance in school? Explain.

In summary of the information researchers have gathered, when

students divide their time wisely, they can complete their school

activities on time and perform well in their academic tasks without

cramming. Time management also helps them increase productivity and

reduce stress, making it easier for them to perform well in tests and

other school activities.

2. Is time management can really be helpful to your academic performance

specifically in your written works? Explain.

In relation to the information researchers have compiled, all of the

respondents answered yes to this question. Having a time management

technique is very helpful to their academic performance, especially their

written work. It helps them control their time and be more efficient at

doing tasks. This also helps them organize their to-do list and schedule

tasks in a manageable time frame, making their written work easier to

accomplish and preventing cramming.

3. Is your time management skill is enough? Explain.

After examining the information that has been gathered from the

respondents, most of them answered no. They feel that their time

management skills are not enough, even though they know how to manage

their time. Sometimes they still struggle to finish their activities on

time, which is why they tend to cram. The students acknowledge that they

25
often let their dopamine get ahead of them, leading to a lack of time to

finish their school activities. They also admit that they get distracted

by things they want to do instead of focusing on what they need to do.

While the other respondents who responded yes stated that they can pass

their activities on time and do the things they want to do because their

skill is enough managing time. One of the respondents stated also that

their time management skill is balance.

4. Can you balance your time doing activities and the things you want to

do? Explain.

The students face many distractions while doing their activities but

manage to balance them by using time management techniques. Most of the

students answered no; they couldn’t balance it. But some of them

explained that they set limits on doing things they wanted to do; they

set alarms to remind them of schoolwork that needed to be done. They

admit that they sometimes struggle to balance their time because they

tend to do fun things and do what they want instead of focusing on the

things that are more important. They also acknowledge that they are

easily attracted to using their phones and social media, which leads to

being distracted and not being able to do their schoolwork.

5. Have you ever experienced passing your activities late? Explain.

Considering the answers of the respondents we have gathered, most of

the Grade 11 St. Patrick students experienced passing their activities

late, and they attribute it to their insufficient time management skills.

However, when they do pass their activities late, they tell their teacher

26
the real reason why. Some of these students state that they sometimes

struggle to understand the activities and get distracted by unnecessary

things. They also admit that their laziness caused them to finish their

activities late or that there were so many things to do that it was

difficult to finish everything on time. The rest of the respondents who

answered no, stated that the reason why they don’t pass late is because

they are focus and and also avoid distractions. One student answered

sometimes, because of their personal matter.

6. In what way you use your time wisely and avoid distractions?

The respondents use their time wisely by doing tasks one at a time;

if they are unable to finish the task, they look for other activities

that are fun to do for them to refresh or rest and not burn out. Some of

them prioritize completing their activities on time by having a time

management strategy and scheduling each task or activity; they avoid

doing things that are unimportant and not beneficial for them or their

goals.

B. Survey

Researchers have gathered negative results from an self

completion survey with one of the subject teachers of Grade 11 St.

Patrick, who’s handling 4 subjects in that said class. The results

also relate to the respondents’ responses to survey question number

five. That most of students pass their assignments/activities later

than they should. The majority of students also acknowledge in survey

27
question number three that they lack sufficient time management

skills.

Here is a pie chart that shows the results of the researchers’

survey to help make things clearer.

Furthermore, researchers have gathered data that will benefit both

students and researchers, as well as provide us with a key to potential

recommendations.

Chapter V

Summary of Findings, Conclusion and Recommendation

This chapter presents the summary of the findings, the conclusions

arrived based on the findings and the recommendation offered.

Summary of Findings

The summary of data collected from Baco Catholic School, Inc. Grade

11 St. Patrick students will be addressed in this chapter.

28
This research study found that time management strategies can

improve respondents’ academic performance. Students who adopt effective

time management tactics perform better academically, with higher

productivity and lower stress levels. Time management is significant for

academic performance as well as stress reduction for students. It also

emphasizes that some students have difficulty managing their time, which

leads to cramming and incomplete tasks. The students recognize that

distractions and their desire for enjoyable activities might have an

impact on their time management. To better manage their time, most of

them employ tactics such as setting limits, setting alarms, and

prioritizing things that are more important. Students frequently submit

assignments late, and they blame this on poor time management, a lack of

comprehension of the topic, or laziness. The responders also stress the

value of prioritizing vital duties while simultaneously taking breaks and

preventing burnout by engaging in fun activities.

Conclusion

Time management skills can help students stay organized, prioritize

assignments, and avoid procrastination, all of which can lead to better

school performance. Students who practice effective time management

strategies are the one who are more to have a more productive day. They

can reduce stress and improve their overall well-being by effectively

29
managing their time, which can have a positive impact on their academic

performance.

The efficiency of time management tactics, on the other hand,

differs depending on the particular student and the exact strategies

implemented. It is also critical to emphasize that time management is

only one of many factors that can influence academic success.

To summarize, while time management strategies can be beneficial for

enhancing academic accomplishment, their effectiveness varies by student

since not all students are capable of doing things that other students

can.

Recommendation

In this part, researchers proposed a recommendation for the

students, parents, and teachers, but before making any suggestions the

researchers considered and studied the responses of the respondents. On

top of that, the researchers’ primary goal is to raise knowledge among

Grade 11 HUMSS students about the effects of time management strategies

on their academic performance.

In connection, this the researchers would like to recommend the

following:

 Students should set specific and achievable goals for their academic

work, create a schedule, use to-do lists, avoid multitasking, and

take breaks during study sessions to stay focused and avoid burnout.

30
This can help them prioritize their time and stay focused on what is

most important. Additionally, they should create daily to-do lists

that prioritize tasks based on importance and urgency.

 Parents can encourage their children to develop good time management

habits and provide a supportive environment for studying and

homework. They can also encourage healthy habits such as getting

enough sleep and exercise, which can help them stay focused and

productive.

 Teachers can encourage students to prioritize tasks based on

importance and urgency, provide guidance on effective time

management strategies, and offer support and resources to help them

manage their time effectively.

 Future researchers can conduct longitudinal studies to examine the

long-term effects of time management strategies on academic

performance and success. They can use a variety of research methods,

such as surveys, interviews, and observation, to gain a more

comprehensive understanding of the relationship between time

management strategies and academic performance.
