2) Drape the patron; and
3) Prepare patron hair coloring service.
#1: Pre-Test
True or False: Write the word correct if the statement is correct and False, if the statement is not true. Use a separate
sheet for your answers.
1. Examining the patron’s type of hair and skin involves determining the texture of his / her skin.
2. A strand test is a preliminary test given before a tint application to determine the required development time.
3. Knowing the service/s you offered is a must in attending patron’s personal needs.
4. We use tail comb to apply color to the hair.
5. Draping is a means of protecting patron’s clothing.
6. Determining the skin type of the patron must be observed to provide appropriate hair coloring product.
7. Wearing of hand gloves is not a requirement in hair coloring services.
8. Previous hair care service is not necessary to know before giving a tint.
9. Giving a tint is most adviceable when you undergo hair rebonding treatment.
10. Skin color is not necessary to consider in color selection.
HOW TO ASSESS THE PATRON’S PERSONAL NEEDS:
Discuss with the patron his/her preferences, what is his/her expectation after hair coloring service.
Make the patron aware of his/her limitations then give suggestions on what color or product would best
suit his/her.
Examine the patron’s type of hair and skin color.
Help client decide on his/her choice by showing his/ her catalogues, magazines, and guides on hair
coloring fashion.
WAYS OF RECEIVING A CLIENT/PATRON
Be sure that each client/patron is accorded the due respect courtesies and pleasant greetings to make his/her
feel the warm welcome from the salon.
How coloring works?
Hair coloring works by penetrating each hair cuticle, entering the hair cortex, and bonding with the hair (permanent
color). While non-permanent hair color can be shampooed out eventually, permanent color, as the name suggests,
permanently colors the hair. However, since hair constantly grows, the color will ultimately grow out.
Hair coloring can be done professionally by a hairdresser or independently at home. Hair colors used in hair is a combination
of two substances, which are the hair color creams (made of ammonia) and the oxidizing lotion (made up of hydrogen
peroxide). The combination of the two is a compound which alters the natural color of the hair.
Ammonia as an alkaline chemical lifts the cuticles of the hair fiber and allows the colour to be deposited onto the
cortex(the inner part of the hair protected by the cuticles). Ammonia is also used to lighten the hair’s natural pigment so
it can be re-coloured. Ammonia is a respiratory and asthma irritant, a potential endocrine disruptor, and is persistent in
the environment, meaning it sticks around. That is why, the discovery of ammonia-free hair dyes have been part of the
industry since it helps to lessen the negative effects of hair dyes made of ammonia. But, not all “ammonia-free”
products work in the same way, and have varying results. While, oxidizing lotion is usually made of hydrogen peroxide
and it helps open up your hair cuticle for the dye to penetrate.
Skin Type And Color & Hair Condition
Hair type also makes a difference. Coarse hairs, which are large in diameter, generally take more time to absorb
color, while fine hair, which is small in diameter, takes less time to absorb color. Dry or permed hair may absorb color
more quickly. Since several factors affect timing, it’s essential to use a strand test to estimate coloring time.
Skin color must be highly considered in determining the shades of the tint to be applied on patron’s hair.

PATCH TEST
Procedure:
1. Select test area.
2. Wash test area with mild soap and water.
3. Dry test area with absorbent cotton or a clean towel.
4. Prepare the test solution.
5. Apply test solution to the test area.
6. Leave it uncovered for 24 hours.
7. Examine the test area for either a negative or positive reactions.
A negative skin test show no sign of inflammation.
A positive skin test is recognized by redness, swelling, burning, itching, blisters or eruptions.
Basic Rules For Color Selection
1. For color observation, the client’s/patron’s hair should be clean and dry.
2. Use a color chart to show the product’s range of colors, their names and numbers.
3. Compare the patron’s hair with the shade that is closest to the chart.

STRAND TEST PROCEDURE
Once the result of your patch test performed is negative (no signs of inflammation). Strand test is the next procedure to
perform to see if the color selected doesn’t show adverse effects to the hair of the client and fits him/her satisfactorily.
Strand tests are like doing a mini Hair Coloring process on a small amount of Hair to ensure you get the results you want.
Use a Strand Test to:
* Test if your Hair Colour is what you want. *Test if you are using the correct Developer.
*Test if the Hair Colour is Light or Dark enough to your taste.
* See where you may need to make some adjustments to your Colour, without doing a full head Colour process.
1. Wearing gloves mix a small amount of your desired Colour and Developer. Take a small amount of Hair
from the back of the head, or in an area that can be easily
hidden. Separate your Hair strand and clip away the rest Strand test is also performed during the

Presence of metallic or compound dyes.
Health and Safety Precautions
1. Perform patch test before the application of tint.
2. Do not apply hair tint if a patch test is positive.
3. Use clean applicator brushes, bottles, combs and towels.
4. Do not brush hair prior to application of color.
5. Take a strand test for color.
6. Do not mix tint if you are not ready to use it.
7. Do not apply tint if metallic dye is present to the hair.
8. Use a mild shampoo. -Make your own record card.
9. Protect patron’s clothing by proper draping. *Scoring rubrics will be given by the instructor.
10. Do not permit hair color to come in contact with patron’s eyes.
11. Always wash hands before and after servicing a patron.
12. Wear gloves to protect the hands.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR
DIFFERENT KINDS OF HAIR COLORING?
1. Grey Color -use to
cover white or grey
hairs, shades from
number 0(natural) is
best use in this case.
2. Any Color – all
color shades except
from natural shades
can be use.
3. Bleaching- use to
lighten people’s hair
and to remove color
through an
irreversible
chemical reaction.
4. Ombre- blending of
one color hue to another, usually needs to bleach first to achieve desired hair color.
HOW TO MIX COLOR SOLUTION?
1. Get a glass or plastic bowl for mixing the dye and developer in. This is where you will combine your hair dye
products, and what will keep it all contained. Never use a metal bowl as it can oxidize the dye, which means that
your hair color might not change.
-Metal bowls can also cause hazardous chemical reactions.
2. Put on latex or plastic gloves. Put the gloves on before you begin mixing the dye and developer, as this will
protect your skin from the chemicals. This will also help to prevent your skin from getting stained by the dye.
3. Combine the hair dye and developer using a 1:1 ratio (50% color cream + 50% oxidizing lotion). The ratio of hair
dye to developer will be specified in the instructions that come with your hair dye package. Following the
correct ratio is crucial for your hair to be dyed properly.
4. Use the applicator brush to mix together the dye and developer. Mix these together until the mixture is smooth
and consistent in color and texture.
-Never use metal utensils to mix together the dye and developer.
(Your formula/color solution is ready for application. Make sure to prepare the patron first.)
→Helpful Suggestions → Watch a video on how to mix hair color creams and oxidizing lotion for best results.
