We have been studying different systems of the human body. Our nervous system controls all of our
actions by receiving information from our environment, sending messages to our brain, processing
these signals and then sending a response back to the involved parts.

Using this understanding students will design an experiment that explores how fast these signals
travel through our nervous system.

Students will choose an independent factor, such as the input of information into a nervous system.
As an example, this can be a sound, or a visual cue, or a simple touch on the arm. The student will
then choose a response that should accompany the input of information in order to time the response
time of the reaction.

First, they will describe how and why they thought of testing the nervous system response they are
looking at. Next, they will hypothesize what they think the results will be. Students will describe, in
detail, the variables they have chosen to change and measure...specifically how these variables are
significant to this specific experiment.

Students will conduct the experiment and gather data individually. Each student having designed
their own experiment. From this data they will make a graph and evaluate the graph, using scientific
understanding to explain the results. Students will also reflect upon the accuracy of their hypothesis
and method as well as consider a next experiment to further investigate their question about the
nervous system.

Your final product will be a typed report, submitted to Learn, answering these questions:

Criterion B:
Strand i
What information can you state and outline about the body system you are experimenting on? What
observations and research have you done? How did your research help to further develop your curiosity
about the nervous system?

Strand ii
Outline your prediction regarding the response of the nervous system to different stimuli. Use the format:
“If (describe Independent variable) then (dependent variable) Because (science).”

Strand iii
What variables will you consider? What is the independent variable that you will investigate? What
variable will you measure? Which things must be kept the same? Why did you make these choices?

Strand iv
Describe and list the exact steps you will take and the materials you will use to conduct an investigation
and experiment to test your ideas about how the nervous system responds to stimuli.

Criterion C:
Strand i
Create a graph or a visual representation that shows all the data collected from your experiment. Make
sure your graph is complete and labeled correctly.

Strand ii
Using the information on your graph, state the conclusion of your experiment. What have you learned
from this experiment?

Strand iii
Outline and discuss your hypothesis regarding your conclusion of this experiment. Was your hypothesis
correct? How do you know this? What information supports your evaluation of your hypothesis?

Strand iv
Outline and discuss your method regarding your conclusion of this experiment. Was your method correct?
How do you know this? What information did you obtain from your method that lets you know it was the
right method to use?

Strand v
Outline and describe the next experiment you would want to do, after learning what you have learned from
this experiment. What is another question you can ask?
