Module Overview

MODULE OVERVIEW

1. Introduction

ST1012 Programming Fundamentals is a first year module for Diploma in Infocomm Security
Management (DISM) and Diploma in Information Technology (DIT) courses.

2. Module Aims

This module aims to teach students programming fundamentals and object oriented concepts using
Java. Students will be taught programming fundamentals such as data types and operators, control
structures, methods and arrays. Object-oriented concepts will also be introduced. At the end of the
module, students will be competent in using programming for problem solving.

Module Overview

5 Assessment

The assessment consists of an Exam, an Assignment and regular quizzes.

Assessment Weightage Format


Students will be given an assignment and they are
CA1: required to use Java to develop a solution for the problem.
(Assignment) 40% Interviews will be conducted on week 17 to assess the
students.

o Regular quizzes (Open book)


CA2: 20% o Student attitude and class participation

EXAM: 40% All topics (Open book)

Total 100%

The recommended textbook will be the ONLY reference material that is allowed in the exam and
quizzes. Approved calculators will be allowed in the exam.

Students MUST be physically present during the interview conducted on Week 17.

Students are required to have this textbook for the module. In the open book exam and quizzes,
students are only allowed to bring in this book.
