Homework 4: Flexural Design

(4.1) A reinforced concrete rectangular beam section is detailed with a beam width of
b = 40cm , a beam depth of h = 70cm , and a single layer of tension reinforcement.
The effective depth is d = 63cm , with a concrete compressive strength of
fc' = 350kgf / cm2 , and a yield strength of the reinforcement steel of
f y = 4,200kgf / cm2 . In accordance with the code regulations, please answer the
following questions.
(a) If a beam section belongs to the tension-controlled section, the area of tension
reinforcement provided should be less than a limiting value (cm2). What is the
limiting value?
(b) If a beam section belongs to the compression-controlled section, the area of
tension reinforcement provided should be larger than a limiting value (cm2).
What is the limiting value?
(c) If the tension reinforcement of As = 60cm2 is provided in this beam section,
please calculate its design flexural strength M n .

(4.2) A reinforced concrete rectangular beam section is detailed with a beam width of
b = 30cm , a beam depth of h = 65cm , and a single layer of tension
reinforcement. The effective depth is d = 58.5cm , with a concrete compressive
strength of f c' = 350kgf / cm2 , and a yield strength of the reinforcement steel of
f y = 4,200kgf / cm2 . In accordance with the code requirement of the minimum
tensile strain of beam longitudinal steel, what is the upper limit of the steel area
( cm 2 )?

(4.3) A singly reinforced concrete beam with simple supports and a span length of
10m, in addition to its self-weight, is subjected to a uniformly distributed service
dead load ( wd = 2.0 tf / m ) acting on the entire beam, as well as a movable
concentrated live load of P = 3 tf . The reinforced concrete rectangular beam
section is detailed with a beam width of b = 40cm , a beam depth of h = 60cm .
The effective depth is d = 52cm , with a concrete compressive strength of
fc' = 350kgf / cm2 , and a yield strength of the reinforcement steel of
f y = 4,200kgf / cm2 .
(a) Please calculate the design moment M u .
(b) Please design the required steel area As .

(4.4) Given a singly reinforced rectangular beam, with a cross-section subjected to a

design moment Mu = 20 tf-m, a beam depth (h) of 50 cm, and material strengths
of f c ' = 350kgf / cm 2 and f y = 4,200kgf / cm2 , design the beam width and the
quantity of steel reinforcement for the beam, assuming that the steel
reinforcement ratio (ρ) does not exceed 0.50ρmax.
