FORCE

Look at the videos on the following slides
and decide which would best describe the
situation.
FORCE
A force is a push or
pull in a particular
direction. It results
from an object's
interaction with
another object.
EQUILIBRIUM
A balance between
opposing forces or
actions as static with
zero resultant net

Forces acting on an object does not imply that
the object is in motion

Q What are the
two main
categories of
forces?
TWO CATEGORIES
OF FORCES
There are two main
categories of forces —
contact forces and
non-contact forces.
Contact forces result from two objects
touching each other.

basketball soccer ball shuttlecock
APPLIED FORCE
a force given to a
person or object by
another person or
object. Its symbol is F
depending on who or
what applies force to
the object.
FRICTIONAL FORCE
is the force acting
against or opposite an
object in contact with
which makes the
movement of the object
slow down. Friction
always opposes the
motion of an object.
NORMAL FORCE
is the force that acts
perpendicular to the
surface of the object in
contact with. Its symbol
is Fn.
TENSION FORCE
is the force
applied to string,
rope, chain or
cable. Its symbol
is T
Non-contact forces act on an object
without coming into contact with
another object.

GRAVITATIONAL
FORCE
Gravitational force is the
force by which an object
attracts another object
towards itself. The Earth pulls
objects towards itself due to
its gravitational force.
MAGNETIC FORCE
Magnetic force is a force
that attracts or repels
magnetic objects. It is
the push or pull exerted
by a magnet.
COMBINING
FORCES
In an object, there may be several forces
acting on it. Net force or resultant force is
the sum of all forces acting on an object.
Two or more forces in the same line of
action exerted on an object are balanced if
their effects cancel each other.
The force of gravity (Fg) and normal force (Fn) are assigned opposite signs.
Fn is given a positive (+) sign while Fg is given a negative (-) sign.
If both Fg and Fnare given a magnitude value of 3 units, then the net force
along this line (vertical) will be:
Fnet = Fn + Fg
= 3 units + (-3 units)
