Module – 1 Introduction
Practice Problems
1. Describe different roles of a traffic engineer in India. Make a list of traffic data required to be
collected by a Traffic Engineer in field for assessing the performance of a road.
2. What are the objectives of Traffic Engineering?
3. Explain PIEV time with the help of a diagram? What is the value of PIEV time recommended
by various organizations (National and International)?
4. Make a list of vehicular characteristics that are important in traffic engineering. Explain the
vehicle classification as per IRC and AASHTO.
5. A truck traveling at 50 km/hr approaches a stop sign. At time t 0 and at distance 20 m from the
stop sign, the truck begins to slow down by decelerating at 3.5 m/sec 2. Will the truck be able
to stop in time?
6. A car approaches an intersection controlled by a Two-Way Stop Sign. Through traffic on
main street is quite heavy with an average headway of 5 sec. The acceleration characteristics
of the car is given by the equation,
dv
=0.9−0.012 v
dt
where v is the speed in m/sec and t is time in sec
Assuming that the width of the intersection is 10 m and the length of the car is 6 m, determine
if the driver of the car can clear the intersection (Take PRT of the driver 1.5 sec).
What is the minimum gap required for crossing the intersection?
