Republic of the Philippines

PROPOSED PROGRAM PLAN:

Healthy Wellbeing; Healthy Community

The Covid -19 Pandemic changes the way how we should take care of our health. Health and wellness
are sometimes being left out on a common Filipino family. Health delivery program although available
yet people find it not as a priority vs. their daily essential needs.

In deeply understanding on Health as a family’s priority it is very important that we know how much a
family Living wage. According to Ibon Foundation (a non-Profit research and Education and information-
development institution) as of August 2022 “Filipino workers are still having a hard time keeping up with
the rising Cost of Goods and Services despite an increase in minimum wage. For instance, the National
Capital Reagion Minimum Wage is barely half (51%) of the Php 1,117 estimated family Living wage
(FWL) needed by a family of five to Live Decently as of August 2022”. Thus, creating a priority budget for
most of the Filipino family to allocate mostly on their food and basic commodities thus, health budget
are becoming less of their priority.

Seeking health professionals are very costly, usually seeking medical advice cost 500Php or more (10$)
depending on specializations needed not to include being hospitalized.

Education and Community based programs as health service plays a major role in uplifting the
community’s awareness and perception of health. Health and Wellness promotion ate tools for a
preventive and cost effective way of developing healthy wellbeing and a healthy community.

Community’s health awareness is a stepping stone to have a healthy community, if people in the
community know early signs of diseases, and can identify on when a diseases needed to be referred to a
healthcare facility, early prevention and early detection of diseases.

Effective implementation of community health programs in areas like Sucol involves mobilizing volunteers, including health care workers, medical personnel, and health advocates, to disseminate health education through direct community engagement . Initiatives can focus on local health concerns by distributing educational materials and organizing health teaching by Purok, developing relationships within the community . Coordination with local health workers and structured planning, such as organizing regular medical consultations and basic diagnostic services, also enhance program reach despite budget constraints .

Local leaders and healthcare workers play crucial roles in promoting community health and wellness by facilitating coordination and implementation of health programs, mobilizing volunteers, and fostering partnerships within the community . They are instrumental in engaging the community through education initiatives and organizing activities that raise awareness about health issues, thus influencing positive health behaviors .

To engage diverse community members, strategies such as utilizing social media for volunteer recruitment, and conducting health education sessions tailored to varying demographics—such as maternal and child health, youth reproductive and mental health—are effective . Establishing pharmacy gardens and hosting free diagnostic days can appeal to different interests and needs, encouraging broader community participation . Integrating cultural values and using local languages can further optimize engagement across different community segments.

The proposed health program plan by Pipit Fund aims to organize Health Care Workers and allied personnel, provide timely health education, and conduct activities to deliver health awareness in Sucol . These objectives align with community needs by addressing gaps in health knowledge and empowering residents with information about disease prevention and health maintenance . The program emphasizes grassroots engagement and education to bolster community health consciousness, aligning with local priorities amid economic challenges.

Organizing a core group of volunteers is beneficial as it ensures a structured approach to health advocacy efforts, enabling effective planning and execution of community-based health programs . A dedicated group allows for the division of responsibilities, efficient allocation of resources, and consistent engagement with community members, leading to sustained health education and wellness promotion activities . Additionally, having a core group facilitates continuous assessment and refinement of programs based on community feedback .

Community health awareness contributes to creating a healthy community by enabling early identification of disease symptoms and encouraging timely referrals to healthcare facilities, thus promoting early prevention and detection of illnesses . Health education initiatives enhance community awareness, fostering proactive health maintenance and reducing the burden on healthcare services through preventative care practices .

Filipino families often struggle to prioritize health and wellness due to financial constraints, with the rising cost of goods and services outpacing the increases in minimum wage, such as in the National Capital Region where the minimum wage is only 51% of the estimated family living wage . Consequently, families allocate most of their budget to food and basic necessities, leaving less for health-related expenses . This economic pressure impacts community health initiatives as it hinders the community's ability to prioritize health education and preventive measures, maintaining demand for accessible community-based health programs .

Financial instability forces Filipino families to prioritize essentials like food over health expenses, impacting their ability to allocate sufficient resources for health and wellness . To ameliorate these effects, community-led health programs that offer free or low-cost health services and education can be implemented, along with policies aimed at subsidizing medical costs and increasing access to affordable healthcare solutions . Partnerships with local governments to provide health-related assistance and funding can also mitigate financial barriers.

Potential challenges in volunteer engagement, such as competing priorities and limited time, can be addressed by aligning volunteer roles with individual skills and interests, offering flexible participation schedules, and creating an inclusive culture that values each volunteer's contribution . Public recognition and continuous communication about the impact of their contributions can motivate sustained involvement . Leveraging social networks and providing leadership opportunities within the program can also enhance volunteer retention.

Developing relationships with individual Puroks enhances the effectiveness of health education programs by establishing trust and ensuring that programs are culturally sensitive and tailored to specific community needs . Engaging directly with Puroks facilitates better understanding of local health issues, encourages open communication, and supports community-led solutions . This grassroots approach increases program acceptance and participation, ensuring a more sustainable impact on public health outcomes.
