Project Description YES ALUMNI will conduct a workshop focused on enhancing English reading skills among
kids from the underprivileged community. This project will take place in Sheikh Siraj
Foundation which provides free of cost education for deserving kids.
Our project will focus on enforcing essential reading as well as storytelling skills among kids
but in a way that makes learning fun for them. First we will begin with a fun an interactive
Icebreaker round to pave the way for a comfortable and friendly environment in the
classroom. The icebreaker activity will include a game called “Pass the ball”. Through this
activity they will be able to tell their names as well as one fun fact about them.
Children who reads stories better imagine things and have a strong creative vision. They learn
new words and see the world in new ways. Because of this fact, we will start with a
storytelling session. This will be done through a story circle. The kids will be explained that
everyone will play a part in creating a Story. Each person will add a sentence or a few
sentences to build the story collaboratively.
Next, the kids would be taught why reading is important and beneficial. We will talk about
how it can improve our vocabulary as well as concentration. Moreover it can boost our
imagination and we can write better. And it can be pretty fun. After that, a short children’s
book will be read to the student. Based on that book, we will do activities like “Book
Charades” and “ Story Telling sequencing”. This will encourage the kids to read more often
and will enforce this fun habit in them to a good extent.
To wrap things up, we will provide them with kits containing a children’s book, bookmark
and stationary items like pencils, highlighters, sticky notes, pens etc .All these items will be
essential for the kids to help them in their reading as well as writing. After distribution of kits
we will take some group pictures and say our goodbyes.
The schedule for the project is as follows:
- 8:00 AM: Arrival at the foundation
- 8:30 AM - 9:00 AM: Welcome and icebreaker activity
- 9:00 AM - 9:30 AM: Story Telling session
- 9:30 AM - 10:00 PM: Benefits of reading session
- 10:00 PM – 10:30PM: Read Aloud Session
- 10:30 PM – 11:00PM: Book Charades Activity
- 11:00 PM – 11:30 PM: Story telling sequencing activity
- 11:30 PM – 12:00PM : Distribution of Kits and group pictures.
