Assignment 4

This assignment, based on the content of Unit 4 of the Study Guide, is worth 3% of
your grade. We recommend that you hand it in after you complete Unit 4. You must
show all of your work in order to obtain full marks. For your convenience, each
exercise mentions the section of the Study Guide that corresponds to the given
problem.

Note: Each of the questions below is of equal weight, and each will be marked out
of twenty (20) points. To gain full marks, you must show all your work.

(Section 4.1)
20 points 1. a. Let ~u = (1, 2, −3, 5, 0), ~v = (0, 4, −1, 1, 2), and w
~ = (7, 1, −4, −2, 3).
Find the components of

i. ~v + w
~

ii. 3(2~u − ~v )

iii. (3~u − ~v ) − (2~u + 4w)

b. Verify that the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality holds.

i. ~u = (4, 1, 1), ~v = (1, 2, 3)

ii. ~u = (1, 2, 1, 2, 3), ~v = (0, 1, 1, 5, −2)

(Section 4.3)
20 points 3. a. Find the distance between the given parallel planes

2x − y + z = 1; 2x − y + z = −1.

b. i. Show that ~v = (a, b) and w
