INTRODUCTION:
Carabao Dispersal Project is conceptualized in a manner that it provides additional income to the
farmer. Draft Carabao will be used in cultivating the farm, sugarcane Fields and at the same it could
reproduce offspring to be dispersed to other members of the Livelihood Association. It could also
promote farm productivity, provide maximum utilization of land and it’s resources and improves fertility
of the soil.
Sitio Makatol, Barangay Tara, is an agricultural community with approximately 80% of it’s
constituents engage in corn farming and also cultivating sugarcane fields as laborer. Topography is flat
and soil condition is fertile. Aside from farming, other sources of income are also tending the sugarcane
fields of big sugarcane planters who pay the laborers in per day basis or “pakyaw’ basis
The Carabao Dispersal Project will assist the farmer in cultivating their farm and will give additional
income to the farmers by using the animal as draft/working animal in the sugarcane fields. Planting of
Ipil-Ipil trees and Napier for animal forage and fire woods will also be encouraged to be planted along
the boundary lines and in the contour bunds.
The scheme for Carabao Dispersal Project will be provided to the first recipient of 5 members in a
batch. Each member will received one(1) head of carabao to be taken care of and once it produces
offspring, the caracalf will also be dispersed to the next recipient. Ipil-Ipil trees and Napier will be
planted along boundary lines and contour bunds on the onset of the rainy season. While going into these
activities, the farmer may go into tending the one(1) head of carabao in his backyard which he has the
option to use the animal as work animals in his farm or in the sugarcane fields in the neighboring area
and at the same time he will allow the animal to reproduce offspring to be dispersed to the next
recipient. Ipil-Ipil trees and Napier will be planted for forage and fire wood.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT:

GENERAL:
To augment the income of the farmer-proponent, uplift their living conditions and improve the
nutritional status, maintain the balance of ecology through the maximum utilization of the by-products.
SPECIFIC:
[Link] utilize the available space in the family backyard;
[Link] make use of the idle time of the family to become productive;
[Link] utilize the indigenous resources and by-products available in the area;
[Link] compliment one livelihood project with one another thus it will argument family income.
RATIONALE:
Sitio Makatol, Barangay Tara has an approximate distance of 12 kilometers from the center of
Barangay Tara. It has a flat terrain. The type of the soil is clay- loam type which is suited to livestock
raising such as carabao and cattle.
PROJECT AREA:
Barangay Tara has best attributes for agriculture. It is an agricultural-based community with
favorable climate for Carabao production because of it’s temperate weather conditions.
The farmer with one-half to one hectare who is willing to adopt carabao dispersal project which
could utilized as draft animal in their own farm and also used working animal in the sugarcane fields. Ipil-
Ipil, Napier plants will be planted as forage to the animal. This farmer, with the assistance of the office of
[Link] “Chiquiting” Sagarbarria and the municipality of Mabinay will be granted livelihood
assistance of P150,000 intended for the purchase of 5 heads of carabao costing P30,000 per head.
THE PRODUCT:
Carabao Dispersal Project produces several products which will be referred to as line-products and
by-products.
Carabao:
Considering it’s year round activity, the use of carabao in cultivating the land of the farmer and
usually it is also used as draft or working animal for the laborers in cultivating sugarcane fields of some
sugarcane farmers in the neighboring areas. Usually the laborers are paid in per day basis or in “pakyaw”
basis. Inorder that this project will be enjoyed by other livelihood members, the animal will also produce
offspring and the caracalf will be given to all members of the Pagpalambo sa Pangabuhi sa Makatol
(PPM).
As a by-product, animal manure will be accumulated and dried for use in the fertilization of farmlots
for corn production.
Ipil-Ipil and Napier
Ipil-Ipil and Napier can be planted along the boundary lines and along contour bunds which could be
used for trapping the soil from erosion. Ipil-Ipil leaves are good sources of feed concentrates for cattle
and the tree are sold for firewood. The leaves can also be used to neutralize the acidity of the soil and
good source of organic fertilizer to the corn plant. Giant Ipil-Ipil variety is preferably planted because it is
fast growing. It will thrive best in rocky-clayish type of soil and in rolling areas.
A farmer could also earn additional Income by using the carabao as working animal in sugarcane
fields of big hacienderos and will be paid per daily basis or pakyaw system.
