bus coming at a great speed overturned when it braked suddenly. Senior
students of your school rushed out and did everything to save the
passengers. You were part of the rescue efforts. Write a report in 150-200
words on the accident and your friends’ role, for your school newsletter. You
are George/Mary. (10 marks) [CBSE (AI) 2017]

Answer:

Bus Overturns on NH2 and NHPC Crossing

By Mary

Pari Chowk, March, 10

At about 8.30 a.m., yesterday, a private bus, carrying passengers, of Rome

S-22, coming at break-neck speed, while trying to overtake a Honda City,
braked suddenly as a boy ran to cross over the other side of NHPC or Pari
Chowk. In seconds, the bus overturned. It could have been that the driver
lost full control of the bus and the breaks failed or the size of the bus was
incompatible with its speed and the sudden break. Passengers could be
heard yelling and crying for help. As the school had not started, the High
School students near the school gates immediately rushed to the spot, tried
to get ladders and after breaking the glass panes, dragged passengers who
were terrified and injured. Some were already with broken heads and limbs.
Local help came in ten-fifteen minutes. The ambulance arrived and the police
from the nearby police station on being called up by a senior student arrived
to help in the rescue operation. There were 40 passengers on the whole. 3
women passed away, 5 children had serious injuries, some were moved to %
the nearby hospital, while a few were given first-aid by the school medical
team and sent away. The driver had serious head injury and a broken arm,
while the helper died on spot.

It is high time that drivers become more responsible, frequent police patrol is
arranged for at intersections and heavy penalty is imposed on crossing
speed limits.

Local support played a pivotal role in managing the accident's aftermath by providing timely assistance and resources. Community members' involvement, including the ambulance response and police intervention initiated by a student's call, illustrates the significance of this support network. It helps bridge the initial critical moments before professional help arrives. The presence of local resources and their readiness to assist were integral in ensuring that injuries could be dealt with swiftly and efficiently and highlights the strength of having an engaged local community .

Public awareness campaigns and educational programs could mitigate accidents like the one reported by promoting safer driving behaviors and pedestrian awareness. These initiatives can educate drivers about the dangers of speeding, especially in areas near schools or intersections, and the importance of remaining vigilant. Furthermore, teaching defensive driving practices and emergency response strategies can equip drivers with better skills to handle unforeseen situations. Simultaneously, educating pedestrians, particularly young students, on safe road-crossing practices can reduce risky behaviors that trigger such accidents. Thus, comprehensive community-focused programs can create a safer road environment .

The reported bus accident exemplifies the need for stringent safety regulations in public transportation to prevent such tragedies. It highlights deficiencies like speeding, inadequate vehicle control measures, and possibly ignored maintenance, which regulations could address. Implementing protocols for regular vehicle inspections, enforcing speed limits, and ensuring drivers are adequately trained can significantly reduce the risk of accidents. The immediate impact observed due to these lapses underscores the severe consequences of non-compliance, thus advocating for more rigorous oversight and enforcement .

The bus accident near George/Mary’s school was primarily caused by the bus traveling at a high speed as it attempted to overtake another vehicle and then braked suddenly to avoid a child crossing the road. This sudden maneuver likely led to the loss of control, possibly due to brake failure or incompatibility of the bus's speed and size with the sudden braking. In response, senior students from the school rushed to the scene immediately, procuring ladders to rescue trapped passengers by breaking glass panes. They helped injured individuals and coordinated with local help, ambulances, and police for further assistance .

From the scenario, it is evident that swift communication and coordination are critical in managing emergency situations effectively. The school students' rapid response, which included contacting local authorities and helping with initial medical aid, highlights the importance of immediate action in minimizing casualties and damage. Coordinating quickly with external emergency services like ambulances and police ensured a more comprehensive rescue effort. Without efficient communication channels and teamwork, the response could have been delayed, potentially leading to more severe consequences .

The report suggests several preventive measures, including encouraging responsible driving, increasing police patrols at intersections, and imposing heavy penalties for speeding. These measures seem effective as they address both behavioral and enforcement aspects. Encouraging responsible driving is crucial for changing driver behavior, while more frequent police patrols can serve both as a deterrent and as immediate intervention personnel. Imposing heavy penalties may discourage drivers from exceeding speed limits. However, the effectiveness of these measures largely depends on consistent enforcement and public awareness campaigns .

To prevent similar accidents at intersections near educational institutions, systemic changes could include redesigning the intersection to incorporate traffic calming measures like speed bumps or elevated crosswalks, which naturally slow vehicle speeds. Implementing strict traffic surveillance using cameras can deter speeding and provide evidence for enforcement actions. Community engagement in monitoring, coupled with frequent traffic safety drills in school, could sensitize both students and locals about road safety norms. Enhanced lighting and clear road signage can improve visibility, while coordinated efforts between the school and local government can establish regulated pedestrian crossing times. These collective changes aim to create a safer environment .

The school community’s quick mobilization and effective actions in response to the bus accident underscore the critical importance of emergency preparedness in educational institutions. The swift response, from rescuing procedures using ladders to the provision of first aid, demonstrates that having a structured plan and training in first response skills can greatly mitigate the impact of accidents. Their ability to coordinate quickly with medical and police services further highlights the benefits of having pre-established protocols and communication channels for emergencies .

The school community played a crucial role in the immediate aftermath of the bus accident by quickly mobilizing to provide assistance to the passengers. The senior students were first responders, helping to rescue those trapped inside the overturned bus by using ladders and breaking windows. They managed to extract terrified and injured passengers swiftly. The community’s actions demonstrate a well-organized response, highlighting their readiness and ability to act efficiently under pressure. Additionally, some passengers received first aid from the school's medical team before being sent to the hospital or allowed home, showing that they had a pre-arranged setup to cater to emergencies. Their effective coordination with local help, ambulances, and police further ensured a more comprehensive aid effort .

Participating in the rescue operation may have several long-term impacts on the students. Positively, it might increase their sense of responsibility, civic duty, and confidence in handling emergency situations. However, witnessing severe injuries and fatalities could also lead to psychological stress or PTSD, depending on individual resilience and support systems. These experiences might invoke a greater awareness and personal advocacy for road safety and community service. Addressing psychological well-being post-event through counseling and debriefing sessions could help mitigate negative impacts and foster personal growth .
